Range (small fuel tank capacity) is the kryptonite of the 4runner

Just needed to rant for a second because the range on this thing is ruining the experience for me.

Getting ~280 miles out of a tank is brutal. I can’t even drive to LA on a single tank without having to stop—unless I want to push deep into the fuel reserve, which I’m obviously trying to avoid so I don’t cook the fuel pump.

The worst part? There really isn’t a better alternative on the market ... well G-Wagon lol, and I don't want a bigger suv.

Is a 25-gallon tank from the factory really too much to ask for? In hopes someone from Toyota somehow reads this.

Well your problem is where you live...not the gas tank! I consistantly get 21 MPG in mixed use driving for the 7500 miles on my SR5. I have never gotten less that 300 miles before it was empty.

I don't know anyone who ever bought a 4Runner after Gen 1 for mpg. If you go to a place where fuel is unavailable, take more fuel with you. If it really is ruining the experience of having the vehicle, get another vehicle; life is too short. Fortunately, your vehicle has good resale value despite the 19-gallon tank. You know what they say about fast cars: they can pass anything but a gas station.
You say that buuuuut....

My 2017 340i would do about 480mi (highway) on a 15.8gal tank, while still getting to 60 in 4.5 seconds.

Didn't like the snow though!

So, I spoke with someone on the phone there this afternoon.

He indicated that the Tacoma tank would not fit as there are enough differences between the 4Runner and Tacoma (I also compared Toyota part numbers for the fuel tanks and they are different as well).

He did say that they are actively developing a tank for the 6th gen 4Runner though. He didn’t give a date or capacity, but indicated it would likely be ready for sale later this year/first of next year.

This is something I’ll definitely be adding to my 4R. I’ve got a 40 gallon tank in my work truck (to make up for poor mileage), but it still gives me 400-500 miles of range between fill ups which is great.

300 miles until fill up which is around 16 gallons, we all know the tank is 19 gallons. Which is about the same miles per fillup that my GTI got which had around a 13 gallon tank. They built this thing so overlanders can carry around their cute little gas tanks on the side!

well for my use (not off roading) after 4 hrs of constant seat driving time, i am ready for a break/stretch/tank refill.

using 13 gals (i usually start looking for a gas stations at 1/4 tank) @ 21 mpg will get me around 275 miles and about 4hrs at 70 mph.

but thats just me. i take my time and enjoy the trip so i have a tendency to stop more often than when i was younger and go for long stretches before stopping. what use to take 2 days to do 1800 miles now takes 3 days and i only do sun up/down driving now.
