from what i remember ...

eco means the trans shifts way sooner to get into the highest gear it can as soon as it can to get better mpg.

and i am not sure if it starts in 2nd gear or not, i cannot comfirm this anywhere


comfort means it does eco mode + steering soft + shocks soft (if you have avs) to absorb bumps/expansion joints better than normal or sport

not sure if it does eco or normal shift points for comfort mode, again no detailed info right now

I am sure not all vehicles deactivate cylinders for efficiency, I just suspect it is getting more common now that the technology has improved enough for it to be useful (I am also assuming it has and it is ;-)). Good point though, it is hard to tell what else might be going on "under the hood" (literally in this case, but figuratively as well) in each of the modes aside the more apparent shift points. I could imaging it adjusting fuel/air/etc. to favor power over absolute efficiency (or the other way around of course).

For someone that is still waiting for my 6G order to be allocated, if I’m reading these posts correctly, can the modes be changed while in motion at any speed or do you have to stop or at least slow down to a certain threshold?

No restrictions, change any time. The only "mode" you need to stop for is switching to 4WD Low (4WD high can be done while moving) and probably the specialty 4WD modes like crawl control (although I do not recall specifics on those, but would make sense anyway).

FT4wd only restriction is you can only lock/unlock the center diff under 62 mph.

never had an issue with unlocking at higher than 62 mph in my 2014 though.

sometimes i was a little slow or forgot i was in H4L leaving town going to work. once i get outside of the city limits it goes from 30>45>55>75.

and we have a small town roughly 25 miles/squared

L4L you need to follow standard procedures as usual.

complete stop, neutral, then L4L then wait for it to engage (which can take a while depending on how long its been since the last time)

Lately I've been pretty happy with the "Custom" mode, primarily because it lets me spin the dial blindly fully clockwise after startup (and then smack the engine auto-stop button) without having to adjust back and forth to hit the correct setting. I've got a Limited non-hybrid, the Custom option may not be available on every trim (it was in the main dash display settings).
Custom let me set Throttle to Performance, Suspension to Comfort, along with some other settings.
Shift timing / transmission is definitely affected. Going from Normal to Custom at 35-40MPH will bump the RPM about 1,000. I like the Performance throttle response compared to the others due to the slight lag at lower speeds.

I was using comfort on mine as all the reviewers said it was the go to setting for the limited. With 18's I find comfort is nice on long highways but in the city it actually seems to make the steering feel a bit loose, normal tightens things up to a point where the ride is almost the same but the steering wheel feels much better. Sport is also fun but I basically never use it unless I have buddies in the car.

Limited has 20s. But I agree. I’ve switched. I’ll dabble in sport for fun now.

Does your 4runner shift a little weird when driving/starting up cold? I've noticed that the first few initial shifts early in the morning/while the trans is still cold can result in some ... rather awkward shifts

Goes away right after tho

Not sure if you directed your question about weird shifting when cold, but I have not seen this behavior. That said, I am in Southern California where the current "cold" is in the mid-50s and warmer. How cold is it where you are? I could imagine a bit of oddness if it were really cold.

I have noticed hard shifts occasionally when it is cold. That said it is not as bad as my 5G was, that thing did not like cold weather at all.

Right now it's about 39-55F in my area, but I've also experienced this in the summer mornings as well. So it's not directly related to cold temps per say, but just when the transmission itself is not warmed up yet.
