how tame were these trails out here? I've heard they are pretty mild particularly in something like a TH. Have been wanting to check them out for a possible family (w/ young kids) camping/overlanding trip
I just did some of them last weekend. I’m not an experienced off-roader but wanted a capable vehicle to access trailheads. The trails were super fun out there, not not beyond my novice abilities. I went to American Basin to summit Handies Peak, and that was super fun, there was a fun feature at the end. Nellie creek was also fun, did that tonight get to Wetterhorn trailhead. There’s tons of campsites off of those roads that are really nice and many on the creek.

Agree - really nice campsites and lots seemed available. When we got to the end of Nellie Creek we decided we have to do Uncompahgre Peak - but that will be another trip.

Did Transfer Trail to Grizzly Jeep Road to Coffee Pot Road - about 7 hours. Transfer Trail was pretty straightforward for the most part - steep, rocky ascents, tight switchbacks. On the plateau some serious ruts but it was dry so no issue. It does have some technically challenging areas though. After you pass Haypress Lake you’ll hit a steep ascent. There is a bypass on the left - take the bypass. I drug the driver’s lower trailing arm mount…and that was on the bypass. There were two guys on dirt bikes who didn’t and they’ve been doing part runs to fix one bike since yesterday. You will get pinstripes. Grizzly Jeep Road also has a couple challenges but overall pretty straightforward. Coffee pot is easy gravel road.
So after 3 days of trails I have to say the TH handled everything well. I did 98% in 4Lo, S1-S2, SDM, MTS Rock or Auto. Used Crawl Control once and that was more so I could just pay attention to the line. The camera system is amazing. Absolutely zero issues with transmission temperatures. Everything was rock solid. 4Lo is the key I think. The R/T Pro (35/11.5/17) is amazing, no problem with any environment from loose, sharp shale to steps to large rocks to mud. Ran them at 15 psi on the 709 Bead Grip.
Two areas of concern and Archer called it - armor on the shock mounts, trailing arm and probably LCA. I got lucky on the trailing arm. Second area is the Compressor- if you’re running larger tires the stock unit just can’t keep up.

That is definitely worth doing! There are so many trails out here and it would be awesome to gain from their experience.

i hear you on that. Recently smashed the lower part of my rear shock and broke my adjustment knob and sheared off a good part of the part where it attaches. Also ground down parts of my trailing arm brackets. Just bought all RCI Offroad armor for LCA, shock mount and trailing arm mounts. Installing next week.

Yea -I’m with you. I think I got lucky today so I’m not taking it lightly.

Did the same thing a few weeks ago in my Trailhunter. I was certain I was going to get a puncture as I still have my stock tires but surprisingly was fine. I love getting 24mpg in the summer on these tires but I hate being scared of a puncture. Did Ouray to Lake City via Engineer Pass, then Lake City back to Ouray via Cinnamon Pass, stopping along the way to do Handie's Peak. Jaw droppingly beautiful loop. Trailhunter does it no problem although I also need to invest in some skids for the trailing arm mounts and shock mounts as those have a couple scrapes on them now.

Your truck looks right at home up there! And I agree about the side trails..you could spend weeks up there and not hit them all. Wish it was a little closer to home.

Finished off the trip doing Medano Pass from the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s straight forward but fun with some decent climbs, water crossings and loose sand. Oh, and curious bison. Put a little over 3k on the TH this week. Lots of different terrain and highway miles to and from CO. Zero issues. This really is a great truck.
