Undefeatable

I finally mounted a matching 285/70R17 on my spare to match my upgraded tires, and it got me thinking, does the stock emergency jack still work with larger tires?

I know a lot of us are running bigger setups, so I figured it’s better to figure this out now rather than on the side of the road.

A 285/70 r17 is still 32.8 inches in diameter so the truck shouldn't be any taller or require a taller jack then the stock wheels.

That's not factual, I'm running a 285 that measure 34". Check your tire specs for actual diameter.

Nope,

Falken Wildpeak RT/o1 285/70/18

That's why I say, you have to look at the individual tire's demisions.

18 inch wheel vs 17 inch wheel with the 285/70 spec is a different tire size, not just wheel diameter... 34'ish on the 18 vs 33'ish on the 17.

Yeah, It's almost like I said you can't go by the number on the sidewall, you have to look at the diameter...

He asked for 17s not 18s. So tirerack could be completely wrong for all their specs but....

Not sure why the rim size would effect if the tire is going to fit or not, it's the overall dimension which you have to check for each individual tire. Not all 285's are the same size despite rim size or what's marked on the sidewall. You have to look at each individual tire specs.

Rim diameter isn't related to profile, its a percentage of the width. So a 70 aspect ratio (profile) on a 285 is a set size mounted to a 16 or a 20. Thats why a 285 70 r18 is ABOUT 1inch larger then a 285 70 r17. Same reason why a 265 75 r17 is the same diameter as a 285 70 r17. Narrow width needs a higher percentage aspect ratio to reach the same diameter of 32.8.

You can check here to get a picture of how the rim affects diameter when using metric ratio sizes; https://tiresize.com/comparison/

Try throwing 285/70 with 20 inch rims in the calculator, big tire!

I think we're talking right past each other. My point from the beginning is you can not go by the listed "285/70/18" or "295/70/18" or whatever is listed on your side wall. You have to look at the size of the individual tire your purchasing .
