People in the US generally don't want diesel, regardless of emissions. It's $5.50/gal here and 37% more than 87. Diesel in Europe is 8% more than regular gas. BIG difference. In Japan, diesel is cheaper than regular gas. A bump in MPG there pays off.

And a 200hp diesel is not exactly what US consumers are looking for in a 5000lb vehicle. That's the HP of a base 3500lb Rav4. Europe and such pay $8 a gallon for anything so MPG gains and efficiency are at a premium.

I drove a BMW X3 SUV diesel in Greece and it was a dawg. In the US that thing is a rocket. I was soooo disappointed after hitting the gas the first time.
I don’t think would sell many in CA right now. Well over $7/Gallon

I decided that getting the 25 ORP Hybrid had most of the important factory 4WD items also the TRD skid plate, sun roof, 14" screen and JBL system. Then I added after market items I thought were important. I have done PPF, lo profile rack, awning, rock sliders, Banks airbox and turbo tubes, additional lights, and trailer brake. Next up is lift with Bilstein 6112/6100 shocks and UCAs. Then once I hit about 15K on the tires, will switch to 17" wheels and 275 tires. I carry a compressor when we go out on trips. I'm so happy with my rig. With hybrid, instant torque 😁

Bit of a contrarian view here, but I went with the Trailhunter. came absolutely loaded (dentist version for sure) but the Old Man Emu shocks, rock sliders and full setup are amazing. For $500 i was able to install the TRD Pro air intake and eliminate the "snorkel" intake and its annoying sounds. out the door at the dealership, ended up $15k below the TRD Pro. Admittedly Maryland isn't a top market so the dealer wanted to move the inventory, but could not be happier.

I used to have Yukons and always went with a lower trim than the Denali, and then always regretted it... Same here with the 4Runners - I'll never understand someone buying a lower trim and then "Pro-ing" it and end up spending almost what it would have cost for the TRD Pro. There is no question that the Pro will hold it's value better than any other 4Runner, the looks and little things that are included (which have already been mentioned) and then the off-road capabilities and I could go on and on... After having a LC250 1958 for a year, there was no way I was going to save $10-15k and go with anything but the Pro. Had it for a few months and loving every minute of it - and driving it in Sport mode and that sound is pure joy!

I get it, but several count points for us poors that buy SR5s šŸ˜‚

-Pros are way harder to get; ie we cant all have a Pro, even if we wanted it
-The "Toyota Tax" is real, on any trim level. The BOF argument is old; My 19 Ford F150 STX 9business truck) still rides better, has better sound (basic level F150, so not like its a King Ranch), is less plasticy, same or better MPGs, etc. And its a 7 year old vehicle
-Some of us just like modding/tweaking a vehicle with stuff here and there, putting our own touch on it and making it ours, regardless of trim levels
-Some people have built more capable off road vehicles starting with SR5 or lower trims, and using the savings to mod it out to what they need and need it to do vs an overpiced, overhyped top trim level that is not capable for everyones use case, but the price tag would suggest is

I had the cash for a Pro, not a problem. I also had a Durango Hellcat on my list as a fun toy as well. The 4Runner won on what I wanted it to use it for: beach trips and beach driving, light trails with the family, etc. Thought the Hellcat wouldve been fun on the beach šŸ˜‚

Long story short, some of us just wanted a good, hopefully dependable vehicle that we could mod, personalize and just have fun with. Some of us just like to start with a base and build, some of us like to start with a top tier trim and build.

its mostly an issue if you want a turn key solution or you are building the hardware from 3rd party sources with better functionality than toyota.

if you are going to rip the good parts out and put in better gear then its cheaper to go with a SR5 than say TRD off road and ripping out the oem expensive parts you already paid for for better gear that is costing you out of pocket.

its all a matter of how you are getting to the same point. pay oem cost then aftermarket cost

or just pay toyota cost and live with it.

the deeper you go down the rabbit hole you realize the money you spent up front with say a TH or Pro could have been saved and redirected to better off roading gear if you bought a SR5

pay 73k for a TRD Pro or get a 45k SR5 and buy that 25k of money you saved with better aftermarket gear

You are kind of right. But to get some of the Pro finishes like the much better interior than a Off Road Premium would be near impossible or crazy expensive. IF and thats a big if you want to really rock crawl/serious off road a brand new vehicle then you could make it a bit better and save a few bucks. Sway bar disconnect, 3 position Fox shocks, soft touch interior pieces, sound system, lighting, ect. make it hard for me not to go pro.

oh i completely understand. as you get older your priorities shift for more comfort than pure off roading capabilities. i love the options of having a TH or Pro but it goes along the lines of these Fast and Furious cars. do you want a 3-400k car and spend more money to get to 1000 hp or get an old vehicle and make a sleeper build that does just as good or better than a turn key 400k car ???

perfect example in the first movie, ferrari and the supra

if i could do the Pro life and didnt have a mostly endless flat state and have time to enjoy a TRD Pro i would. but things have gone a different route and i enjoy my platinum, i moved to the comfort zone way back in the 2000's and havent looked back.

i tried sedans but while great in the non snow months and the comfort was better than a 4R, i needed more practicality for winter than summer. i looked in lexus and almost did an impulse buy of a IS350 then did a hard look at a gx460 and even a new sequoia (that storage puzzle killed it), but rationale kicked me in the junk and showed me the light of my errors (no lexus dealers in the state so i have to drive 550 miles to get any warranty work which would entail 3 days of PTO, yeah not happening)

i see all the mods people do on here and they are awesome to look at and see the write ups of the travels, but yeah, thats is about as close as i will get to that lifestyle. i live vicariously thru them :ROFLMAO:

Yea, to me its that instant torque, I miss it in any vehicle that doesn't have it.
