I say build your own. I liked the TRD PRO but not all the extra cost associated with it. I wanted the IForce Hybrid but knew I was going to change out the wheels, tires, didn't like the hood scoop that flutters in the wind, the gloss black fender flares and suspension. I ended up getting the ORP and added:
Method wheels 305 NV 0 offset
Toyo Open Country RT Trail 285 X 70 X 17 tires
Peak Suspension Lift and UCA
Westcott Design Rock sliders
CBI Supper stock front bumper
DV8 Rock skid plates
Color Match mirror caps
Baja Design S2 bumper lights

All this added up was still cheaper than the TRD PRO or Trail Hunter if you consider the were asking for $5,000 + dealer markup and its unique because I built it. I think if you have the knowledge, time and money to build it out your way do it. If you want a rig already built buy the TRD PRO or Trail Hunter.

For me...I decided on the Trailhunter. Throughout my 30's and 40's...I heavily modified Subaru STI's. Finish one project, open another...my tastes changed with my age...I finally ended up with a fully raced prepped Sleeper Legacy GT. It was a full on build to include chassis/suspension/brakes/and a fully built motor and transmission. After a while...I decided this was too much work to keep up. Which brings me to the reason I chose the Trailhunter. I wanted something I would be happy with as is...without wrenching to get it to something I wanted. I've done some minor cosmetic mods like window deflectors/ceramic coating/full legal tint/mudflaps/cell phone mounts...but, plan to leave it as is. Less worries and my mind is now free to think about other things rather than the next mod. I liked the Trailhunter as is...let's see if I can keep my hands out of the engine bay though...lol. Here are a few of my previously modded vehicles...I'm not at home...none of my STI's are pictured here... The Legacy GT pictured put down 450hp/430tq to the wheels...all grip...

Nice work! You sound just like me. WRX, STi, STi, WRX, Crosstrek Wilderness.... Built an STi and WRX to COBB Stage 2. Found it was more fun to just go play and cheaper than going fast. Racing was fun but too expensive with a family.

Subaru Brother! We still have 4 of them, ranging from 330-1000whp. My kids all drive turbo Subarus. I've been modding them since 2006, but now I have a 2025 Tacoma and 2022 Tundra.

Brother!! Nice!! Those are some sassy subies! They're great, so easy to work on. I did the STi build myself. Got a deal on the WRX through the local tuner. Fun stuff, but went for the Wilderness after the WRX got rod knock

Too many EJ's meet that fate.

Sadly. I sold it to my tech for the last one, and he said cylinder 3 looked like it hadn't seen oil in weeks. I wholeheartedly would have upgraded to a new STi, but, dumbasses stopped making them, and didn't want to just get another WRX, because I also wanted more space for gear. Came close to an Outback wilderness, but my girl's got an outback. But all things summed up, Subaru, and the crosstrek i had, just didn't make a vehicle I needed or wanted. And now that I have my Trailhunter, it'll be real hard to ever go back.

I’m in the build it camp. This is my 4th Toyota 4WD in the last 25 years (1 Taco, 3 4Runners) and I’ve always modified them with the aftermarket parts I wanted. Suspension and armor are so easy to DIY that it’s a no-brainier for me. Plus the fact that I can put all the takeoff parts from higher trims is the cherry on top.

One of the reasons I went Pro is the bigger axles and upgraded a arms if I ever decided to go portal and go up to a 37". Another I wanted to wheel in a little style and comfort instead of the more hardcore rigs that I built over the years.

That’s a legit argument for a higher trim. I know I’m never going over 33” or moderate terrain.

You can make it look like a TH but it's still missing a bunch of internals to actually be one...

Don't get me wrong, 4 Runner looks great.
.
What internals are different other than the swaybar disconnect?

Everything else seems like it could be added to other trims

Let's see if I can help here.... there's a few videos that went very in depth, I think the Tinkerer has some good ones, but the axle one got moved behind the paywall. My assumption is that these would stay the same from the Taco to 4R.
  • First is the longer travel suspension. It has longer control arms and forged top ones to extend the wheels from the pivot for actual travel improvement up and down.
  • To make that happen, the CV axle is upgraded to a long travel with hd multistage ball joints for the extra angles needed.
  • TH comes setup 3" wider as well as the 2/1.5" lift as a result *edit
  • The driveshaft is bigger and split vs the Pro (and the rest), and tucked up high for better crawl clearance.
  • When I looked underneath, some of the other parts just looked beafier, or bigger, but don't recall specifics.
  • The bumpers can be switched, but the TH has high clearance and steel rear.
  • TH has the integrated light bar
  • TH has the raised intake
  • Comes with axle dump exhaust
  • No moonroof available on TH
  • Reduced capacities on TH because of the extra kit
  • Anything else i missed?
