Tint job gone wrong

AI is not always right. . It also tends to base answers on where you are located unless very specific about the location. So if you said is windshield tint legal it would likely give you your states law.

I was testing AI against a popular computer certification test. This was using the test publishers practice exam. It was multiple choice and I tested a couple AI and they regularly got a number of answers wrong and they had such conviction in the answers too. I did maybe 7 tests and AI regularly scored in the 70-80% range.

AI is just a tool not end all be all answer. At least right now

Another tinting adventure for me...my guy, who I have used several times without a complaint, broke a tab on the rear hatch control when he was tiniting my rear window on my brand new Pro...I sort of freaked out a bit since this thing cost me about $80k all in, so I am finally getting it fixed after 3 weeks waiting for the clip. I'm headed there this afternoon, but I'm wary that he will screw something up again or it won't fit like it was from the dealership - we'll see.

Also, while it is mostly illegal to tint the windshield, you can easily get a waiver from an eye doc as I did here in NC. So now I can tint the whole car as dark as I want and the windshield with the UV Blocking without issue.

Update from dealership:

Part can't be replaced or fixed. I could "rig" it but there isn't a great solution due to how the tab is broke. It will require a brand new windshield. Not too happy right now but I'm gonna let the dealership replace it.

Question though, can they remove the factory Toyota dash cam or is it permanent? I'd really like it taken out.

I removed the factory dashcam to install my own. It's pretty easy. It's just double sided tape.

I'm gonna get them to take it out when they replace it. Million dollar question is when will the windshield come in. I'm hoping next week and get it installed. Hoping this isn't a month long adventure.

Are you referring to this as the dashcam? This is the vehicle cam that is integral to the proper operation of the vehicle’s safety functions. The dashcam mounts to the left of the rearview mirror

It doesn’t make sense. Even if it were possible to remove. How much view of the road would be gained? That area behind the mirror is obscured by the rearview mirror on every single car. Its essentially a visor right now.

some states even an air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror is a ticket for obstruction of view. i wouldnt put it past a grumpy officer to cite you for any tint even if it doesnt go below the AS1 line.

as usual, ymmv with how finicky a HP person can be on a given day.

No sorry for the confusion. The factory toyota dash cam(not in the original pic) is what I am wanting them to remove when they replace the windshield. The photo are the electronics and bracket behind the rearview mirror.

Your picture isn't very clear. I can't tell if that's a broken piece from the windshield or just a plastic cover.

All of the parts are available on Toyota's parts website, but you'll probably have to pay premium prices because it's still a new vehicle.

I had a 2020 Toyota 4Runner and had the windshield replaced. Unfortunately, the installer didn't know how to remove the plastic cover behind the rearview mirror. The correct way is to slide it downward, and it comes right off. After I got the vehicle back, I noticed a rattling noise. When I removed the cover, I found that the installer had used super glue to hold it together.

I checked the price of a replacement cover, and it was about $55. Instead of buying a new one, I drilled through the cover and the plastic mount and secured it with a screw. The result was excellent—honestly, it was even better than the original factory setup.

The point of my long story is:

1. Many installers don't know the proper way to remove certain panels, and unfortunately, many don't take the time to learn.
2. Toyota uses some very fragile plastic parts. The clips, tabs, hinges, and connectors break very easily.

So, in some cases you can blame the installer, but in other cases Toyota deserves some of the blame because of how delicate these plastic components are.
