They have physical access in most cases, just like they do when they clone keys.
Cloning a key fob doesn't require physical access, just proximity to an active key fob. Putting the key fob into battery save mode prevents it from being cloned.

Our key fobs are continuously emitting rfid signals. I bought a small key fob pouch that blocks rfid which everyone has been talking about in here for my key. I always have it in there and pull it out when I get to my car. You know it works when the doors won’t open when you get near the car bc the pouch is blocking the signal. I know it’s not perfect as a method but it helps reduce the risk. That’s all we can do. Reduce risk.
You can turn off the FOB from transmitting (prevent FOB cloning) by putting it into "battery save mode". Hold down LOCK while pressing UNLOCK twice. The LED will flash four times total to confirm it's in BSM. When I take the FOB to the car, the doors won't open until the FOB is activated again by pressing UNLOCK.

My condolences and sympathies. Really hope it works out for you.

I did an experiment just out of curiosity. I put my keyfob into an Altoids tin, closed the tin, and I was still able to lock/unlock the door. So the small gap due to the fit of the Altoids lid was enough of a gap to allow the RF from the fob to escape.

So if you were thinking of buying a generic metal box/lid to store all your keyfobs in while you're at home, you'd also need to buy some conducting gasket to wrap where the lid and box make contact (something like this: RF gasket ).

Thanks, I’ll try everything that everyone suggested, I appreciate your feedback

I did a couple tests myself and ended up buying a couple Faraday pouches - here's a link, they're small enough you can slip one key in and they completely block the truck from picking up the keyfob signal.

I picked up this kit that has a box that fits 5-8 FOBs and 2 pouches. Tested all and works.

Faraday Box & 2 Pack Faraday Bag for Key Fob Protector, by Todoxi. Seems like a reasonable price for all that.

The closed pouch is small enough to carry in your pants pocket.

One thing I read about these Faraday pouches in general is that after some extended period of use and flexing, I guess the metallic threads of the fabric will eventually break and start to leak RF. So you need to test them periodically to be sure they still block RF from getting out. Hopefully it's at least a couple years before that happens.

So do you have to do that procedure everytime after you press UNLOCK? Or does it always stay in BSM mode once set?
