PSC System is Laughable at Times

My Toyota unexpectedly slammed on the brakes today, freaking me out, because it mistook the guy in front of me on a motorcycle as a pedestrian entering the roadway. I was doing 45 mph at the time.

I like the feature in theory, but ended up disabling it because it was braking in a lot of situations where I felt it was not necessary for the vehicle to brake.

For example, the vehicle in front is turning and I know when I get to where the vehicle is, it will have already turned off, but it is still close enough to the intersection for the 4Runner to brake.

Do you just manually disengage it every time or did you turn off through something like a Calista?

I don't own something like Calista and I don't have to manually disengage it every time. I turned it off in the settings in the digital gauge cluster.

Yeah, but that only disengages it during that specific ride. Turn the car off, and it’s back on. I thought you were referencing a way to permanently turn it off.

Your Toyota’s Pre-Collision System (PCS) likely experienced "phantom braking." Newer TSS systems can occasionally misread motorcyclists or road obstacles as pedestrians, abruptly triggering maximum automatic emergency braking.

I stand corrected, but ever since I did it, my vehicle has not automatically applied the brakes, so maybe there is another setting I changed that I forgot I changed.

Looks like I was confusing PCS with PDA. I turned off PDA. Sorry about that

I think I turned that off for a while (whichever it is called ;-)) but turned it back on again after I had the vehicle for quite a while. I think I now have all the safety features related to driving/collision on now. It does brake some (not hard braking) at times when maybe not quite necessary, but also reasonable. I have yet to have any case where I felt it did something stupid. The only time close to that is parking and getting to close to a bush .

You are able to reduce the sensitivity to the lowest level which makes it more tolerable, but that is still my biggest disappointment with the vehicle.

And to make matters worse, if mine dings me 2x for following to closely in quick succession, it requires me to hit the brake pedal before it will allow me to accelerate. I can only image what a driver behind me might think as it could be interpreted as a malicious brake check.

Oh right, I recall now I did tone it down to the minimum level. I found that to be quite tolerable. I figure as long as it is a minor annoyance at most (I am not sure if I would even elevate it to the level of annoyance) I appreciate any help the system can give me in safety. No, of course it does not take the place of proper safe driving, but everyone gets distracted or simply may not react quickly enough--or not see something like a vehicle in a blind spot. I think I am a pretty decent driver but still the systems in this car have helped catch things a bit better or quicker.
