I have the RCI skid plates that has access to the drain plug and filter and it doesn't look like it should be too difficult to get to.

The question I have is, anyone have tips to prevent/clean up messes? Esp. where the oil comes out of the drain plug?

When the dealership did theirs, it looks like it made a mess that they just wiped down. My less than ideal plan is to just have a lot of shop rags handy

Aim the pan back: Position your drain pan slightly offset toward the rear/side, as the initial stream shoots out at an angle rather than dropping straight down.

I remove the skid plates when doing oil changes. It ends up being the easiest.

Same. Also gives me a chance to put antiseize on the bolts and get a good look underneath.

Also helps to leave oil cap on to slow the draining down.
