...coming from a set of King 2.5s on my 3G Tacoma, I promised myself I wouldn’t go down that road again unless I truly needed that level of suspension. That’s a lot of money just to get a lift when the truck spends its life on pavement.
I agree. I really didn't want to resort to an aftermarket suspension just to make my already expensive truck have a decent ride on certain roads. The Fox 2.5 rear shocks were $347 each and I installed them myself. They have OEM-style isolation at the mounting points and a boot to protect the shaft. The front Bilsteins are still on, contributing a tolerable amount of "jitteryness" on those roads, but it was the rear Bilsteins that really had to be swapped out. Other 6G owners are trying shocks from different trims or from Lexus models with uninspiring results. I'm glad I got rid of the majority of the jitters without breaking the bank.

I just removed the rear Red Bilsteins from my hybrid OR and put on Fox 2.5 shocks. I think Bilsteins are great, but for whatever reason the damping behavior of the factory rear Bilsteins (and perhaps other 6th gen trim rear shocks) is very, very wrong. The car is totally different with the Fox's. To me the 6th Gen OEM Bilsteins aren't worth the cost of the red paint that they are covered with.

You will definitely notice a change with just getting rid of the rear OEM Bilstein shocks, but it won't solve the whole problem. From the factory , the 6th Gen Off Road has the worst possible ride - it is overdamped AND oversprung. By that I mean the springs are far too stiff and the fast compression damping is too stiff for the springs. It seems like all the trims tend this way judging from all the complaints on the internet. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is the 5th Gen, which was properly damped (IMO) and slightly undersprung which results in a very comfortable and compliant ride. Even with the Fox 2.5 rear shocks on my 6G, it feels like I'm sitting on a giant spring on certain roads. To fix the whole problem you need new coilovers in the front (Fox, King, etc) and new shocks in the back AND new rear springs. Hybrid owners could swap in non-hybrid springs (48231-35410) or the Icon Progressive rear springs. I know what front coilovers I'm getting, but I haven't decided on rear springs yet. I even tow a 4000 pound camper and I'm not worried about switching to "non-hybrid" rear springs. My 5th Gen handled the 450 pound tongue weight from the camper just fine and I bet the 5th Gen rear springs are way softer than a 6th Gen SR5 rear spring.
