Toyota reclaims No 1 in 2025 reliability rankings while US makers plummet to the bottom
  • Reliability Leadership: Toyota reclaims the top spot in Consumer Reports’ 2025 Auto Reliability Survey, surpassing Subaru, driven by durable SUVs like the Land Cruiser and 4Runner.
  • Balanced Innovation: The brand integrates advanced tech (Toyota Safety Sense, digital keys) without compromising mechanical dependability, showing improvements across models like Tacoma and Camry.
  • Competitor Challenges: Traditional American brands (Jeep, Ram) and newcomers like Rivian struggle with quality control, highlighting the growing importance of long-term reliability in a software-driven automotive market.

I am frankly surprised. Not a knock on the 4R, but more on the V6 issues in the Tundra and probably the sequoia. Have the issues, cause, effect and resolution been done.

Do they publish a vin list of impacted vs no impact?

I was in the market for a Tundra and the issues with the engine stopped me moving forward. Until I see documented statements confirming that model is no longer a ticking time bomb, I will not buy.

its for that reason I am surprised at the award for reliability going to Toyota.

I'm a Toyota fanboy but I would think the recall for the 3.4L turbo would have an effect on the ratings

The V35A issues hurt them for sure but I'm still a believer in Toyota overall.

I't's one automobile...built in Texas...Toyota's biggest mistake is having Texan's build their Trucks!

in the grand scheme of things, the failure rate of the tundra engine is pretty low vs the amount of tundra's out there.

i mean there is a pretty in depth post over on tundras.com about the failure rate vs other brands based on hard data.

also no one talks about the issues with the tacoma transmission in the newest gen.

or talk about the sequoia's or the lexus vehicle using the same engine as the tundra.

and toyota quality has gone down vs the old days, but overall its not as bad as some other brands/models. it ebbs and flows from gen to gen across all brands.

personally i have tried other brands, but in the end i kicked my myself moving off toyota over the last 40+ yrs. i am glad to be fully toyota and dont expect to move away.

i have a 23 tundra that is like 9th on the list for a full long block replacement. but currently at 20k miles and going on 3 yrs, still dont have an issue. but then again, i did full oil changes at 1200, 5k, 10k, 15k, 19.5k

and it sits outside 24/365 and deals with our extreme winters were we have hit the following temps (taken from my weather station on the back deck)

YEARTEMP HIGHTEMP LOW
2024103.7-15.5
2025106.0-35.1
202646.2-24.7

I guess this shows how bad the other brands are. Are they saying Toyota is the best of the worst.

not really, it just depends on if you get a bad vehicle or not, tends to be less overall with a toyota.

i have had a ford escort that wouldnt die no matter how beat up it was (father in law ran it into the ground, then i gave it to the son to learn to drive in ND winters), had a mazda protege that ran forever (even ran it into the ditch one winter due to slush pulling me into the ditch), legacy 3.6R that ran forever.

they are out there but you hear more about the failures than the good ones that last forever even on the domestics.
