Hi folks,
I have a dilemma related to choosing between these two tires:
  • LT285/70R18 Falken Wildpeaks AT4W - which is a C-load tire but HEAVY at 68 lbs per tire
  • LT285/70R18 Nitto Recon or Terra Grapplers - Which is an E-load tire but much lighter at 58.5 and 59.5 lbs per tire.
For me it comes down to what the more comfortable ride is, and (to a bit lesser extend but still good to know, which is better for MPG). I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with both these tires and what they would recommend? Does the C-load on the Falkens offset their added weight or is it better to just go with one of the Nittos?

(PS: I know that Toyo's are also an option, but they're also E-loads and their weight is around the same as the Nitto's so it would lead to the same dillema.)

I went 285/65/18 with the Falkens. They're SL rated, same diameter as the OEM 265/70/18 tires on my ORP, so I had to only buy 4 tires instead of 5, since I can use the spare if need be.

I put on the toyos to avoid the weight of the Falkens - it was a rough ride and switched over to the Falkens and it’s MUCH smoother ride (gas mileage is brutal but lesser of two evils)

@4NAUSET Oh wow it was that big of a difference ride quality wise?
What is the MPG hit you took by switching to the Falkens you think?
And do you feel like you feel the extra weight of the Falkens at all? Like in the car's acceleration?

@Joestac yeah I’ve considered the 275s too, but at that point it would make more sense to just get the SL load version of that from Nitto. Load is not that important for me. It’s mostly the size I really like. I’ve tried the 295 recon grapplers but they’re just a bit too big and rub at full turn even with a westcott precollar lift and removing the crash plates. I have a TRD ORP. I’m worried that the 275s will feel too small with the lift kit and too close to OEM.

Falken is a good tire but heavy. I am using the Toyo AT3 with 3 peak snow rating and way less weight. I had the 34s and went to 35s. Not sure of the issues one of the other responses but the AT3s ride great and are money! Highly rated and light.

Thanks for the info.

Did you install these tires without any modifications? I'm looking for the largest tires for my TRD Pro without any modifications (no lifting or spacers). I also want to keep the mud guards. Unless I missed it somewhere, but I've read through other threads and it seems some type of mods are required for larger tires.

No mods needed. These tires are wider than stock, but the circumference is the same, so no difference. And if you get a flat, you can use the OEM spare. We got hammered with snow here in NE Ohio and the Wildpeak AT4W are great in the snow. Really pleased with them.
