If 91 fuel can potentially gain more horsepower, does 93 fuel make a bigger difference?

My dad is a chemical engineer, so I will always remember his words: put the gas that is suggested by the manufacturer. Whatever number appears on your manual, use that one. The engine was designed to operate with that octane. Going higher than recommended will be like a placebo effect?. But this is just me!

There are plenty of scientific type websites out there that say the exact opposite of what that video said. You have to take that with a grain of salt, the engineers at Toyota specified what to put in the vehicle and they designed it for that fuel. Minor horsepower gains are not worth the trouble and there's no reason to pay hundreds of dollars extra a year for a small horsepower gain that you probably won't even feel. I had a Volkswagen golf a while back that showed two different horsepower levels with regular fuel and premium and it was designed for that. Driving it I couldn't tell any difference although it probably would show up on a dyno. I mean it's your money.
20 hp is not a minor gain. Especially for $6 a fill up.

I don’t understand why this topic is subject of discussions at all. It is obvious and scientifically proven that this engine runs better on 93 octane fuel. I use only premium gas in my 4R!

Using anything other than the fuel recommended for the vehicle is useless. The important thing would be using top tier fuel for your 4Runner not higher octane, this is basic science.

Higher octane will yield more power on these engines and have no ill effect (the management system dynamically adjusts). Hence how the exact same engine in the exact same configuration calls for premium in other vehicles on the exact same platform. The idea that running higher octane would harm the vehicle in any way is hilarious. There’s a reason the manual specifies a *minimum* octane, not a maximum.

That being said, there’s no benefit other than the added power. Given this isn’t a sports vehicle, and the manner in which most consumers drive them, I suspect running premium would have exactly zero benefit to the vast majority of owners.

Well, the book also says change the oil every 10 K

I would say yes as I travel the country a lot. I actually live in Ga. And 93 from shell is my go to after motor trend did a gasoline test and it was an ez winner in that it increased HP on the dyno. That being said, I have no problem, stopping at Sams and using 91 that they have..
Man, I couldn’t have said it any better! Shell is my goto. The only difference is Costco is my alternative.
