Nodak,

I appreciate the information and am aware of the problems short trips in cold climates can cause for both the exhaust and brakes. I've had this daily commute and extremely low miles for over 15 years. However, I have done quite well with my ultra low mileage vehicles when it has come time to trade. My 2011 Tundra SR5 had 48k when I traded it in 2021 for my 4R ORP. The 2021 had 17k when I traded it in for the current 2025 4R SP.

I did not have any exhaust issues with the Tundra or last 4R. It is true that the brakes may have gone earlier than normal due to the lack of driving, but would it have been better for me to add more miles to help keep the rotors from rusting and the calipers working smoothly? 🤷‍♂️

In the past 11 years my vehicle maintenance costs have included 2 sets of brakes and 1 set of tires (not including oil changes). I completely agree with your insight (and have read and enjoyed hundreds of your posts over the past 6 months :)), but so far I haven't had any related exhaust issues and don't plan on changing my driving habits to attempt to prevent issues. If I run into issues in the future, I will just have to pay to play (but I think I'll still come out ahead overall).
i think i am outlier due to my location. the extreme temp swings here in ND just excerberates the issue (going from -20F some days/weeks to 0F or even 20F). we had the same issue on our 2018 tundra with her low mileage issue also (and short trips under 5 miles), roughly 44,315 miles in 5 yrs (1910 days / 11-30-2017 to 02-22-2023 / 23.2 miles per day)

Dang! You've been driving! What are you going with for the new tires?

I'm at 22,000 miles as of May 2025.
Daily drive is about 100 miles round trip.
I'm very tight with my local costco gas station

i am guessing you have the oem running boards and oem mud guards?

if so is the debris/snow/slush buildup on the rear passenger door kick ok/bad ??

i am also guessing they need to be lower to mitigate what the oem running board miss

13,600 miles which includes a 5,000 mile plus round trip from the NW tip of WA state to San Antonio TX not long after we took delivery in April 2025 and another 1,400 miles in round trips to Seattle to see the 2026 NFL Champion Seattle Seahawks games.

@Nodak this was during a long cold snap and after a 3 hour road trip with half of it being on slushy snow covered 2 lane roads and with cars heading the other direction kicking stuff up too. Based on that and what you see, I think the OEM running board and mud flaps do a pretty good job. There's aftermarket mud flap options that will provide more coverage though as well as some OEM "Canada" mud flaps that are wider than mine that will provide better coverage.
