Nice
Are you working with the LCs too? Or just 4Rs and Tacomas?
I have tuned quite a few of them. I chose one of them to test and have sent them a map today. I expect it to behave the same as the other platforms. Do you own one, or know of someone who does that has the issue?

The Old Lady has a 25 and it has been doing it since new. Of course the dealership "couldnt replicate it". I do all the family stuff/road trip driving in it (so not a daily for me) and I noticed it and it happens every time. She dailys it and its the same.
**Off topic, but the LC had the same squeaky break issue as the 4R. Shes had that corrected*

My 4R SR5 does it, first drive of the day. I tried putting it in Sport Mode one time and it didnt do it. I plan to do that more for a larger sample size. Makes me think it tied to the shift point programming if it goes away with Sport Mode.

Hmm, I've been paying attention to this in my Trailhunter and haven't noticed it. Only been a month and couple thousand miles, though.

Mine didn’t do it till about 2k miles. Then stopped again around 7k miles. Or… I stopped noticing.

My motto with this truck is: “that’s what durability sounds like”

Hey OP - Love to see this. Honestly always refreshing when you see someone dive in and explore a new platform to better understand it. Good on you.

Reporting in with a '25 Limited trim w/ 4WD non-hybrid. I find that the vehicle not only shifts hard at 1-2 at the first drive of the day, but also does it if you let it sit long enough to let the engine and transmission cool down. This happens in all drive modes and smooths out after the 2nd or 3rd cycle of shifting.

It is more noticeable in normal and custom drive modes in my opinion. Sport helps, but sport+ does a TOUCH better job. Comfort seems to be the softest if my memory serves me properly.

I also noticed that the more passengers/weight I have, the more noticeable it can be in custom drive modes. There were a couple instances where I picked up friends and the car felt like it was shifting like a manual/more herky jerky. It kinda smooths out a bit after, but it takes longer during the colder months.

Genuinely have no idea why Toyota thought it was a good idea to release a transmission with this behavior lol never had any issues tho

I wanted to ask if this also applies to when you shift your vehicle into reverse after driving, I get a harsh thump. It seems to do it most when the engine is running and shifted into reverse. If the truck is in EV mode when I shift into reverse it usually doesnt have a hard thump.

I have noticed it only happens when I am leaving my home garage in the morning after sitting over night and going down the slight declining grade of my street. When it sits in the garage at work all day and I get in to go home it won't do it, but the garage if fairly level.

That sounds like a different behavior than the cold 1-2 shift I’ve been working on.
On the hybrid trucks, reverse engagement can feel different depending on whether the engine is running or the truck is operating in EV mode because the hybrid system is contributing to how torque is being applied through the drivetrain.
The fact that it’s usually smoother in EV mode is interesting, but I don’t want to pretend I know yet that it’s something I can fix in the calibration. I’d need to look at the behavior more closely and see what the TCM is doing during that reverse engagement.
If it’s repeatable, I’d be interested in getting some data on it.

If you're on a decline I highly encourage using the electronic parking brake in neutral before putting it into park. I think a part of that clunk is just the weight of the car resting on the transmission/gear itself, but someone smart than me needs to verify this.

No specific issues with reverse for me but I've definitely felt a hard thump when it engages as well that's separate from the shifter issue.

You misunderstood what I was saying. I park in a level garage, but my street is on a decline. So as I'm creeping down my street the shift from 1 > 2 is rough.

I always put the vehicle in neutral, apply the parking brake and let off the brakes and let the vehicle settle then put into park since my driveway is on an incline.

What I am talking about specifically is when I get home or to a parking lot I usually back in the vehicle to park so when I shift from drive into reverse thats when I feel a hard thump. It does not do it every single time but enough to raise concerns.

Gotcha gotcha. Yeah I've always chalked it up to the car being more rugged and therefore, transmission may feel unrefined as a result
