I just picked up a 2025 6th gen 4Runner Trailhunter in NYC and figured I’d share what worked for me dealing with dealerships in case it helps anyone else. Mine had been sitting on the lot for a while, so they were definitely a bit more motivated to move it, if you can find a unit that’s been there for months or even close to a year old, you’ll have a lot more leverage. I ended up getting about ~$4k off MSRP without playing games, and honestly the biggest thing was going in with the mindset that I wasn’t there to be sold to, I was there to buy on my terms. I knew exactly what I wanted ahead of time and made it clear I was reaching out to multiple dealers, which naturally created competition without needing to be aggressive. I also anchored pricing early based on deals I’d seen others getting. someone on Facebook mentioned getting around $6k off, I wish I knew that before but you can use that as a target to frame the conversation in a realistic range instead of letting them control it. Having outside financing lined up beforehand helped a lot too. I had a quote ready at 5.1% from Pennfed and when the dealer tried to play with rates, they suddenly had no issue matching the promotional rate at 4.9%

On the backend, I told the finance manager upfront I wasn’t interested in any add-ons, warranties, or packages. That alone probably saved me thousands and made the process much smoother since there was no back-and-forth. I also paid close attention to the starting numbers they presented, since some dealers will show a higher “starting price” than what’s advertised and then try to work down from there. Once it was clear I wasn’t emotional about the purchase and was willing to walk if needed, the whole process became pretty straightforward. For reference, MSRP was around $72k and I landed at about $68k before taxes and fees. One key thing, don’t let them pull credit until after they confirm the OTD price. Once they pull credit you lose leverage.

One thing I’d definitely watch out for is dealer add-ons, because that’s where they try to make a lot of their money back. Things like extended warranties, tire and wheel protection, paint protection, VIN etching, and random “protection packages” can add thousands very quickly, and most of it is either overpriced or unnecessary. I kept it simple and just stuck to the base deal. They’ll usually try at least once or twice to pitch something. sometimes even framing it as “you’d be crazy not to take this”but if you stay firm and don’t hesitate, they move on pretty quickly. The only fees that should realistically be part of the deal are taxes, DMV/registration, and the standard doc fee. anything beyond that is usually where you need to start asking questions. At the end of the day, all of those add-ons are optional, and saying no is one of the easiest ways to keep the deal clean and under control.

At the end of the day, it’s less about “winning” against the dealer and more about knowing your numbers, staying calm, and not letting them control the pace. Curious what kind of deals others are seeing right now, especially in different regions.

I live in California and bought a 25 Off-road Pro that is underground color with 800 miles on it. I made them immediately take 1k off because it had a regular roof rack instead of safari rack. The 1k off brought the price down to 64k.
This is an excellent post and the only thing I would add is that if they play games of trying and have you sit around there for hours, just get up and walk out immediately. Thank you for the post.

Jan. 2026 I sent an identical email to all the Toyota dealers within a 50 mile radius.
I told them the exact vehicle I was looking for (Trim level and color), said any dealer add ons or extras were deal breakers, and asked for their best OUT THE DOOR PRICE.
I knew what I wanted, was completely unemotional about the purchase and asked for everything in writing before I would even phone an dealer.

ONE dealer, Janzen Toyota in Stillwater, OK played ball with ZERO games and got the sale.
They sent me the vehicle's VIN (the vehicle was not on their lot and they had to ship it in from the DFW area) and a sales sheet offering $2,391 off of MSRP. (That came to within $20.00 of estimated taxes.)
Maybe I could have haggled down a little more, but I wanted no games and it's a two way street.

The GM, Sales person, and Finance person all said the same thing pretty much word for word. "Buying a car shouldn't be difficult."

End of the day I took delivery on a 2026 TRD Off Road with 13 miles on it out the door price $52,753.

Once you understand all their tricks and have a counter for everything they throw at you, they just focus on closing the deal quickly.

What even is this? I certainly would have done this if it was possible. 😂

my dealer (and 18 toyotas from them since 1990, and 3 owner changes) does invoice if you do allocation reserve request (but you are at the mercy of the waiting game) and $1000 non refundable deposit.

none of those restrictions are an issue for me. but on the flip side, i get invoice. ordered on 12-13-24 drove off the lot 10-13-25. so 10 month wait.

our 23 tundra was a 10 month wait also, but it was invoice. 68k tundra for 63k invoice.

and those prices dont include trade in. they only price trade in at time of actual paperwork.

so i lost some trade in value waiting 10 months on the 23 tundra (traded 18 tundra platinum) and the 14 4R, but they still gave me 19k trade on the 2014 4R limited w/ 120k miles. i lost about 2-3k trade in waiting for the 25 4R to come in.

I guess I got really lucky on delivery. Ten days from initial email to the dealers to delivery. That included them shipping the vehicle from the Dallas Area to Stillwater, OK.

I didn't have a trade in. I dolled up my old Wrangler and sold it outright for thousands more than a dealer would have offered. Overall it was a much better than expected buying experience and I feel like I got a fair deal. AND... I have the privilege of cruising around in a brand new sweet ride.

I also shopped around with several dealerships, once I got a dealership to commit to an under MSRP price, I used that number ($2700 off MSRP) to base my negotiations around. I did lose a couple where the dealership said we may entertain your offer, but we have a couple of people coming in to look at them today. Well they sold, so I didn't get the 4Runner from that dealership. I found the 4Runner I wanted, 200 miles away, and offered them $61k for a TRD Offroad Premium Hybrid. MSRP was $63,724. Vehicle was only on the lot for a day or two, and had 6 miles on it.

dont worry im a extreme outlier for deals. my restrictions are not ideal for 99% of the people. no one cares for a non refundable deposit of $1000 and having to wait months for a vehicle to come in.

but i do get to pick what options exactly i want with nothing extra and get invoice and they dont hound me at paperwork time. im usually in/out in a few hours. mostly waiting for the bank and actual paperwork.

I used ChatGPT this time around. It worked great. $4.2k off an SR5 was the result. Not bad on a low margin trim,

I'll throw my two cents in.

I had been trolling around different dealerships looking at different units and test driving.

Narrowed it down to what I wanted.

Called a couple of dealerships where there was potential for me to do business.
Found one dealership with at least 14 units in stock, trolled back around at the end of the month. I was straightforward with them; meaning no upsell $2,000 ceramic coatings, door guards, etc.
Was able to get 2k off MSRP. They made their numbers and I felt like I had a fair Shake.

I think doing your homework ahead of time and knowing exactly what you want will make life buying a new car much easier.
Knowledge is power and you can't BS a BSR! Dealership scheisters are a dime a dozen buyer beware! Good luck

I just shoot for 10% off sticker on all my vehicle purchases and that is good enough for me.

Good job OP on getting a discount on the Trailhunter.

They're rare around here, currently only 3 green Trailhunters showing within 500 miles on the Toyota site. Two of them in build phase, one in transit. One is pre-sold, another is listed with a $4k dealer "protection package."

Just getting one at MSRP without a ton of unwanted add-ons was a chore when I was buying.

Best advice for a discount is to pick a trim and color with plenty supply.
