Thanks! Appreciate the thorough explanation. Now I get it!

Have not had enough opportunities to play with OnX on my Pro’s screen to this point so this thread has me interested in one of the frustrations. I am currently about 1,000 miles away from my vehicle otherwise I would be out there in my driveway trying to help solve OP’s dilemma!
YW!
Also, I must agree with you on this: " There are more than a few newest gen Tacoma and 4Runner owners out there using OnX. OnX may have already dealt with this issue and could have a solution for you."
I've been meaning to bug them and describe the issue but just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe this thread will trigger the OP or someone (maybe even me) to do that:>) Or maybe someone from onX is a member here and will realize their App is getting some negative attention....

I love OnX. Too bad we are starting to see glitches.

I guess it forces us to rely more on the tiny phone screen and downloaded maps than that big 14” screen that I love in my 6th gen.

When I was in New Mexico and had OnX running on AA when I got close to something and the cameras automatically kicked on, getting OnX to load right after that was very hit or miss. Mostly miss. I even had the entire regions maps downloaded with the highest detail available.
My experience, too.

FWIW…
I understand that this thread is specifically discussing OnX but I have been experiencing a similar issue to the OP using Waze in our Outback Wilderness, JLRU, and two separate rental cars using CarPlay. The only way I could resolve it was to kill Waze and restart.

again, FWIW

anyone figure this out??? I have the same issue. I've downloaded the maps but when i go to offline maps, it won't display in the car (it does work on the phone) - this is a MAJOR glitch in my eyes, if i can't use the giant display what good is OnXOffroad? answer, no good.

it might get resolved for AA when google finally pushes that big update to AA later this year or early next year.

the widgets is the big thing that will help alot

  • Visual Redesign: Material 3 Expressive layout with custom widgets and support for unique display shapes (like widescreen or parallelogram screens).
  • Video Streaming: Parked-only HD YouTube playback running at 60 fps (shifting to audio-only when the car is put into drive).
  • Gemini AI Integration: Voice-based conversational help, context-aware messaging suggestions, dashboard warning light diagnostics, and smart task shortcuts.
  • Immersive Navigation: Detailed 3D maps displaying lane markers, traffic lights, stop signs, and terrain.

The trick, in my experience, is to use the phone interface to get into off-line maps mode and select content and for me it will then all show up on the big screen and I can turn my phone screen off and set it on the wireless charger for a while (until the next glitch)

And iIt helps to install the recent onX app update.

Background: I had an hour long interview with a researcher for onX a few weeks ago - waiting for my $90 gift card, but I did it to have a positive influence on the App not for the $

In prep for the interview I sent the researcher a detailed message about the issues discussed above, including the issue seeing saved my saved content and particularly the issue with onX coming back to where it was after change in source. I've cut in the note I sent below for context (probably TLDR:>)

Anyway, in prep for the interview - which I took in my 4Runner so I could show the issues - I decided to check for updates and there was one. This update partially but not fully resolved the issues - it could now at least find my saved content through the Android Auto interface - which was a substantive change.

I showed the researcher the issues live while driving (slowly) around an empty parking lot so she could experience them (held phone camera so it was looking at the big screen.) and she was recording the call so I'm hopeful my issues get back to the development team - because they are real, demonstratable issues that affect the usability of the app. I'm hopeful I might have another conversation but this time with a developer. Or that they just take my complaints and fix them!

My note to the researcher before the interview is below (FWIW). Hits at the end on my love/hate relationship with onX.
With the focus of the interview on "how they use navigation in the vehicle when on an offroading trip" I will say that I don't use it much because the android auto onX interface does not allow me to find and select my saved content (waypoints, etc.). I CAN select these on my phone and then switch back to the big screen to view but that defeats the point and I generally devolve to using Google Maps to get to the trailhead and then zoom in on the trails I plan to use but I do not use navigation.

However, I DO depend on onX to show me where on the trail I am and I frequently want to zoom in and out - I wish the zooming function were easier and quicker. (Note: I am typically using off-line maps when on the trail)

But this whole process is hindered by the fact that when I switch the view on my big screen to see my 2025 4Runner cameras (or it auto switches based on speed), onX does not usually return to the view I had. Its quite irritating and I sure hope it can be fixed. I hope to show you this failure in the interface.

Lastly, I wish that I could interface with tracks via the big screen android auto interface but there seems no way to do that. I frequently forget to go back to the phone and make sure my tracks get saved when at the end of a day on the trail. And even when I do, the interface is unclear about saving - it asks me about pausing and resuming but sometimes it does not give me a clear save option (might be user error but I'm not a particularly dumb user).

Note: I've done two of the training sessions (beginner and intermediate) and generally learned very little that I did not already know. I had put these same questions in ahead of time but they did not get addressed and I did not get the chance to ask in real time before the hour was up. Hope you are able to provide some insight.

I continue to use onX on my computer for trip planning and finding trails. And I have a decent amount of "content" saved in addition to offline maps saved. When I've got a well zoomed map view and can see where I am on the map an where I am going, I love onX. But when it zooms out to the globe and I have to zoom back in after viewing the incredible camera views my 4Runner gives me I hate it.

For me onX is a net positive but with LOTS of negative. I'm willing to spend 90 minutes with you today on the chance things might improve based on my feedback and the negatives will go down in the future.
