Bearing-like noise

Guys.

My 6th gen started to develop a bearing like noise on the passenger side. When the car is moving the noise starts. When the car is not moving with the engine running it does not sound.

i am trying to figure out the issue. Could it be a bad bearing or could it be a suspension noise?

any thoughts?

It would be worth checking to see if a rock is stuck behind your brake shield.

Otherwise a video would help a lot.

Unfortunately the noise is so acute that ia is hard to record. I will give it a good wash underneath and see if it goes away.

Well….the noise is gone. I think you are correct. It was a rock/ pebble stuck behind the brake shield.

Stoked it was an easy fix.

It happened once on my MKV GTI and it sounded like something was very very wrong.

Guys. Ina afraid the noise is back. This time is a little more pronounced. I am taking it to the dealer but if you guus have any ideas ….they are welcome.

the noise is constant. It looks line metal rubbing against metal. Like a bearing without grease. By the passenger side. It is not the engine. As I rev the engine in neutral there is no sound. As the car accelerates the noise starts and stay constant.
It is a mistery to me. The dealer heard it before so that is a relief.

Any updates? What was it? I have a Trailhunter doing the same thing. Sounds like a stone or a wheel bearing issue. It comes and goes though. Seems to happen when it’s warmer out.

Unfortunately not. The dealer could not hear the noise. They told me that if the noise is back I should bring it in. I did it 2 times. According to them, they had 3 people driving the car but could not hear it. I gave up. I left my car with then 3 weeks and nothing. So they keep telling me…..If I hear the noise I need to bring it back right away but we all know that is not possible……it is very frustrating. If anyone has any ideas please these are welcome to……

I've been dealing with this since day 1 on my ORP, definitely frustrating. For me it happens once I get above 20MPH or so, and is more pronounce the warmer out it is. Dealer said they couldn't hear it the two times I took it in, which is frustrating as once you hear it it's hard to NOT hear it. Still no idea what's causing it, but I've seen posts on Tacoma forums that some of them are having the same thing. Here's a couple more posts about it:

UPDATE! The noise I've been hearing from the front of my 4Runner above 30mph has slowly gotten worse, and now that it's very warm every day (and thus louder) I decided to try the dealership again. Drove for an hour first to make sure the noise was very noticeable, and FINALLY the service manager could hear it right away when we went for a drive.

He said he's had a couple vehicles in for this issue, and that it's a needle bearing in the front differential that needs to be replaced. If you put your 4Runner in 4Hi when the noise is happening it will instantly go away, and then come back once you put it back in 2Hi. Something I never noticed before.

I need to bring it back next week so they can record some audio and submit it to Toyota to see how they want it handled, either just replacing the bearing or possible replacing more depending on what HQ says. Either way I'm soo stoked that this is finally going to be addressed, it's been a major annoyance for me since day 1 with the vehicle.

Posting this to a few threads about the issue in case it helps other people troubleshoot and resolve it.

So I am having this same issue in my 4Runner (2026 TRD Sport -8,000 miles).

Just had it in the shop and they thought it was the brake dust shield but once I got it back the noise came back after a short 10-20 mile ride. My noise seems pretty similar. Rotation high pitched noise that follows the wheel speed and is noticeable from 20-45mph. Noise disappears after engaging 4WD.

I had seen that this is a common issue in previous years and this seems to fit the issue I am having.

Please keep us updated on what they end up doing to fix this. I have another appointment to take mine in next week for them to look at this again and hopefully pinpoint the exact cause.

Interested to hear what the outcome is on this. I had this noise pop up on a roadtrip during the winter at elevation and of course it did not do it again once I got home to flat ass Kansas.... It has not done it since either. But if it really is a needle bearing in the diff I am a little concerned!
