I’m sure other folks have exhausted this question but, so sorry in advance.

I purchased my 26 TRD ORP with 3 miles and I currently have 300 miles. The average fuel economy is 16-17 mpg (60% city and 40% highway 70mph).

Will it stay this low or is there a break in period before the 4Runner will have noticeably better MPG?? I always drive in normal and do not drive sporty or aggressively. I came from F150 with eco boost so I know how to drive turbo engines to get decent mpg (not using turbo too much).

Side note- I do have the cross bars installed and I hear quite a bit of wind noise. Not sure if this is causing the bad mpg? I have also noticed if I reset MPG gauge and only drive in the city I average around 20 mpg. But as soon as I get in the highway, the mpg immediately drops to 17 mpg.

Another side not - I don’t really care what the MPG because I love the 4Runner. My previous vehicle was full size pickup truck so fuel consumption isn’t a big deal to me.

you benefit more in the city than the highway. city you can get into a higher gear and lug around town in such a low rpm gear you make mpg

highway, you just cant beat physics of moving a brick thru wind. plus the way the vehicle is geared you run around 2100 rpm at around 75 mph compared to running around 1600 rpm at 65-70.

also you need to reset the avg mph meter after every fill up, otherwise it keeps calculating your mpg since last reset.

kinda a pet peeve since they changed the way the 5th gen avg reading was per tank and would auto reset after a complete fill up, whereas the 6th gen is avg tank since last manual reset.

but its a meh for me since i hand calc the mpg anyway (actually i have the fuelly app do it for me)

Have you gone through this thread with real world MPG stats from a lot of other gas 4Runner owners?

https://www.4runner6g.com/forum/thr...rs-gas-non-hybrid-4runner-post-yours-⛽️.2472/

You should be able to glean trends/patterns to help answer your question from that thread.

I have 2025 and noticed a gain in mpg around 10,000 miles. Engine seemed to be more responsive.
I was on my third oil and filter change by then too.
Mainly highway miles. Running full tanks across country.

interesting you're seeing such a drop in mpg on the highway. I know this is a "non" hybrid question, by my orp hybrid regularly gets 23+ on the highway at ~70 with the motor always on. I have the roof rack as well but hear zero wind noise. I'm in eco most of the time, but really haven't noticed much difference to normal mode.

I'm driving fairly conservatively but I can't get any better than 18.1 MPG with my Non-Hybrid ORP.

I have non hybrid. For day to day driving. City and maybe some highway I get 18 to 19.
best I ever got was full highway towards the end of a 16 hour trip and that was 24mpg.
most highway trips avg 20 to 21 keeping at about 80mph. The sweet spot for speed and good mpg is 65 to 70mph.
I removed my cross bars due to the noise and I have a sun roof.
That’s been my experience of 7 months of ownership

As my name implies, I've been around a bit. I've also had about 25+ new cars over the years including company cars. Without exception, the gas mileage has improved over time on every one of them. I'd say anywhere from 10-20% improvement between 5 and 10K miles. Mileage seems to max out around 10K.

Don't panic.

What is you current MPG and did it change 20% the first year? I’ve just noticed a lot of ppl reporting good mpg numbers from the very beginning.

I only have about 2100 miles on mine; bought it last September and haven't driven much, some health issues. But the latest couple of trips with combo city and rural highways has been around 21 mpg +/-.

I see you're also in IN; I bought mine from Hubler in Greenwood. If you've been taking mostly short trips in cold weather, you can count on reduced mileage. I used to drive to my office in Plainfield, about 12 miles, everyday, taking the same route. My '16 Jeep Wrangler would get about 19 mpg in warm weather and it would drop to about 16-17 in cold weather, very predictable. The computer knows its cold and adjusts the fuel like an old choke.

Yours is new and you're driving in cold weather lately. Check it again with a few more miles and in warmer weather; I'm betting it will increase.

Big win for Hoosier last night!

I picked up my 4Runner from Carver in Columbus just south of the Hubler location.
Sounds like our drive to work is very similar…I live in Greenwood and drive to Ameriplex over by Decatur Central HS which is about 13 miles one way.
