I’m reading this thread as I await my trd pro that comes in next month. I’m glad it’s working better for you now. Not looking forward to these transmission issues.
I’m hopeful for you that you don’t have any issues. I know there’s many people that didn’t experience what I did. If you do experience the same issues, hopefully it’s a quicker process to get your 4Runner back since I’d imagine they’ve dealt with these issues around the country at this point.

I’m just under 1,000 miles driven since I got my 4Runner back after the transmission replacement and it’s still doing well. I do still feel shifts here and there but nowhere near what it was. It’s very minor and something I can live with, and I’m a very picky person. I’d say it’s understandable given the price of the TRD Pros. Good luck!!

I agree with CrispyTaco, I would lemon law that thing and be done with it. As far as the transmission, it is without a doubt the worst driving transmission I've ever had in over 30 years of driving. Driving under 20mph is horrible. Transmission bucks, jerks, slams, and jolts. My RPMs are all over the place when accelerating and even just cruising you can see them jump up and down. I've been at 2 dealers and they were both useless. I just contacted Toyota corporate so we'll see. If nothing comes out of it I will be getting rid of the 4runner.
Did you ever find a solution to your transmission issues? Your description matches exactly with my experience. I asked that it be checked during the first service and was told it's operating normally. If this is normal, I honestly don't think I can live with it.

According to the dealership I visited, they replaced my transmission. I’ve driven it well over 1,000 miles since then and it’s completely different. It still doesn’t shift as smooth as I think it should from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd sometimes, but it’s also really not bad at all. You can feel it slightly, but maybe I’m just being very critical. Overall, it’s nothing like it was before the dealership replaced my transmission. My advisor kept telling me it’s “an isolated issue”, but it sounds more and more like it isn’t at all isolated.

Hoping you’re able to get it sorted. I know how much it sucked when mine shifted rough and when it sat in the shop for over a month. Good luck!

Thanks for that. Hope it continues to perform properly for you. I will probably take another run it having the dealer look at mine. This time I'll have them drive it from a cold start, which is when it's worst.

hi i ended up selling the 4runner. I absolutely hated that transmission and could not live with it either.

Pro Owner here, sorry for your problems, it sux putting this type of coin out to have a bad experience.

Toyota better get on the ball with some training on these new models because as far as I've experienced at every dealership or tech I talked to is they weren't even as knowledgeable or familiar with even basic functions with these than I am. I swear I taught half the dealership about the features on the thing.

So far no weird shift issues. But now that I read your last response it got me thinking.

I automatically always put it into Sport before I back out of my driveway, is that masking a potential problem?

I want to say I'll not put it into Sport to test it out but I may just wait until they figure this out as I don't want to jinx myself.

Good Luck, and please keep us updated.
Hey so I haven't read this entire thread but I will. I just wanted to reply to this because I do the same thing, put it into Sport before driving. I do this because in Normal, it seems super eager to slam it into a high gear ASAP. Like, 1, to 2 in the first 10 feet of moving and it's always a harsh, un-natural feeling shift. In sport it holds the gears longer and reduces this. I won't lie, I am worried about the transmission. I've driven a manual for the last 10+ years almost exclusively but this thing feels just off. I do hope it's something they can correct via a simply flash.

My continued observations/experiences:

I mostly only notice the rough shifts first thing in the morning or when the vehicle has sat for 12+ hours.

I left it with the dealer for them to experience the next morning. In typical dealer fashion they blew it off. "We tested with another similar 4runner here and it does the same thing". They said they would submit a case to Toyota but the wont get follow up on it.

Today the temperature was 38 degrees Fahrenheit and it was way less noticeable, which is unintuitive. I'll have to see if this trend continues.

I searched Tacoma threads and there are a lot of users reporting the same issue (it's the same engine and transmission).
