The 4Runner is definitely not a "mainstream" vehicle so it's no surprise to me it attracts certain types of buyers. I'm not a marketing person, nor a sociologist, I'll leave that up to the experts to better explain. I spend a lot of time camping, fishing, and boating. I wanted a body on frame wagon (SUV) that was mid-sized (I live in the burbs/city). The Wrangler was too small. The Bronco was too flashy. The decision was easy. I owned mostly Japanese vehicles my whole life. Most people thought I was nuts, just go buy a full-sized pickup/SUV or go with a mid-sized unibody SUV.
