For the folk (most on here) modifying the 4R - Car Nut video to watch

I know, it's not a 4R but, I stonrgly think the advice given is appropriate. I know this will not sit well with the folk spending $xxxx on mods or the sponsoring vendors but still, its a very valid point of view.

Looks like the mods on this truck were not well executed, and unfortunately I believe that is common.

That said, this particular youtuber does not at all understand how many of us use our trucks. This and previous videos show that his concept of off roading is different.

Statements like offroaders should tow their rigs to the trailhead, and that you should have two set of wheels and switch back to street tires when you get off the trail just aren't realistic for the most common use where we are. Maybe that's the right advice for Chicago, I have no idea what type of off roading they do there.

Modifying is always pay to play, and you have to be comfortable about that.

Some mods are more reasonable and prudent than others, e.g. better tires than stock.

But hey, if you go full aftermarket suspension, engine tune, transmission tune, exhaust system, full sound system, cat delete, etc. then don't be surprised when things go very wrong.

For anyone who wants to save themselves some time and an excruciatingly painful oratory delivery … some shop screwed up an instal and mismatched parts and he thinks the reason is OME parts even though they’re an OEM for Toyota. He is also very judgy in an adorable grandad way.

The mods were perfectly fine. Just picked the wrong UCAs is all.

As far as having a dedicated offroader…I wish. I’d love a UTV but nowhere to store it and I’d still need a big expensive vehicle to tow it with.

He said he won’t work on modified vehicles period so I’m not sure he’s knowledgeable about offroading in the slightest. Seems like a knowledgeable mechanic though.

It's more than just a bad UCAs. From what he says, the front bumper cover doesn't fit right after adding the hidden winch, the winch touching other parts and potentially causing leaks in the future, and the front axles binding at full drop.

All those are signs of a less than competent shop picking and installing mods, and I bet they happen more often than we would like to think.

The car care nut is not wrong, a lot of us have built up vehicles and that's fine if you have the money to do it and have the money for the repairs and the premature failure of certain components. Most of us accept this as the cost of having fun. However it is kind of silly if you never go off-roading to build up your truck just to show off.

Hard disagree, I think it's cool to see people modifying their vehicles even if it's just for looks.

I take a very practical and goal oriented approach to the mods that I make on my own vehicle, but many of 4Runners on this board are modified for looks primarily. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

There may be nothing wrong with it but it is silly to build up a mall crawler.

I think every substantial build has an element of modifying “just for looks” - very true when it comes to rim selection for example. I hate fake beadlocks and will die on that hill. Auxiliary lighting is another one where the line between practical and cosmetic is a little fuzzy.

If someone wants to do a build with serious chops and then never use it I’m more understanding of that than the alternative of adding shit that’s only useful cosmetically and has little practical purpose.At a certain point it becomes gimmicky. I think calling it “silly” is valid and in some ways silly is the whole point of the build - nobody who drives a stanced Civic with 15 degrees of camber that drags on the tiniest pebble would argue that it’s not silly.

It’s great that people do it but I couldn’t see myself sinking serious money into a build like that.

People can build their vehicles however they want. Just gotta understand the trade‑offs that come with mods. You see plenty of threads almost daily on forums where people toss on big 'o E‑rated tires and a lift, then get surprised when the ride gets stiff, the suspension clunking randomly, or vibrations show up from the driveline angles being off.

Some shops won’t touch modified vehicles because of liability or the customer now blaming them for their mistake.

I ran into a ridiculous build a while back in the San Juan mountains of Colorado, it was a Jeep with way too much lift and wide tires that it wouldn't even fit down the trail. I got a little satisfaction since I was going uphill on a shelf road (I had the right away) making him back up a quarter of a mile. But hey, he had plenty of ducks on the windshield.

I didn't watch much but at least from the beginning it seemed like the biggest takeaway is going to be doing the mods on something kind of limited that may hold its value much better that won't if you do such mods. If that's the case that make sense.

Not even just limited / rare. Literally everyone would prefer to purchase a stock used vehicle than a modded out used vehicle.
