Post your tent setup! I’d like to hear your thoughts on it

I’m looking to get one and keep going back and forth on a wedge style or a side fold out. Trying to see the pros and cons on each style.

Currently looking at these two.

My friend bought a Top Oak for his LC, the struts broken from one end and it slid and left a big scratch on the doors. The ladder hinges both broke off so it couldn’t grab onto the tent. Inspecting it and they were plastic with chrome wrapping to make it look like stainless steel I guess. He had left it open to air out for two days on top of the LC in his driveway in the summer. He called for a refund and all they did was gave him 20% additional off. Sent him a check but didn’t offer to send him replacement parts or repair options.

Had a fear customer service might not be the greatest with Top Oak.

I’ve also been looking at FSR and 23 Zero but considering top oak as a budget option.

@gvan1998 which iKamper are you running?

I have the Top Oak galaxy 1.0 and I love it. The heating port has been a life saver, definitely recommend getting risers rather than using the mounting kit that comes with it.
Nice roof rack :)

Do you have a moonroof? I’m about to order the Top Oak Glaxy 2.0, but I’m a bit worried about how I’ll mount it. I saw what a mounting bracket looks like, and I’ll need to access the roof bar from the side, which is blocked by the side panels of the roof rack.

I was thinking of measuring the roof bar position, then removing two bars from the roof rack, mounting it on the roof top tent, and then lowering it and securing the roof bars back to the rack.

But that seems like a super precise and time-consuming job. How did you mount it?

thank you!

no moonroof unfortunately

the first time I mounted using their gear which tightens to the bottom of the extrusions. I took off the backplate of the rack and folded down the light bar protector so I could fit my hands in to tighten it. This was a pain in the butt and took about an hour.

I recently switched to Cali raised mounting gear that raises it about an inch (vibration harmonics were horrible on the their mounting gear). Then used the technique you refer to. Took out the extrusion bars and mounted them to the tent. I then cut up some 2x4 and placed a towel under them on my roof. Had a friend help me lift it and play with it enough to get the extrusions to line back up. I used an orange kicking tee and half of a barbell rod to help maneuver it. Used the back extrusion as a fulcrum with the barbell under the rear of the tent to hold it in place while my buddy screwed it in.

was it worth the hassle? Maybe maybe not. I just didn’t think it was worth 350 to have someone else do it.

best of luck!

How do you like your SR5? Doing ok off road with a rooftop tent attached?

Do you miss anything that the higher trims could offer?

I like the sr5 a lot. Off-road it has been a beast. However once I added 400lbs of weight I started getting stuck more. I opted for

DOBINSONS DIFF DROP KIT - PRADO 250 / LAND CRUISER 250 - DD59-644

ICON 2025 Toyota 4Runner/2024-2025 Lexus GX550, Rear, Billet Adjustable Track Bar Kit 54202

ICON 2025 Toyota 4Runner, Front, Tubular Upper Control Arms W/ Delta Joint Pro 58452DJ

DOBINSONS REAR ADJUSTABLE SWAY BAR LINK - SE59-591

ARB OME 2025+ Toyota 4Runner MT64 Kit - 3in Front Lift / 2in Rear Lift 2134K (bolt on)

The OME kit should help with being weighed down. I also opted for a tune and sxth element Intake.

I really loved the front camera, locking diff, and leather seats would have been nice. Eventually plan on getting them.

I bought the sr5 full well knowing I was just going to upgrade it to my needs. That was my core justification for saving a few bucks on a higher trim if being completely honest.

Thanks for the update. I guess I’ll have to start planning my mods.
