Stock tire is 265 55 20 (which is 31.5" in diameter)
Want to get a slightly wider tire and with a little more sidewall
No LIFT

Could I go slightly bigger at 275 55 20 (which is 31.9" diameter)
This change would stay below the 4% increase in diameter (at 1.3%) and width (at 3.8%).

I'm interesting in buying a Limited, so I'm following this discussion. What's the significance of the 4% you mentioned?

Actually it is 3% rule.....relevant to "section width upsizing", resulting in a wider tire and taller sidewall. The diameter increase should stay <3%. Anything >3% is generally considered unsafe and will compromise handling and dynamics.

Ahh, got it, I can buy a slightly larger tire and stick with the stock rims, but I've got to buy a full set of wheels and tires to move up to 33's. Makes sense, thanks.

Why do people put the 33" tires on a smaller wheel, instead of a correspondingly larger wheel? Is it for better off road capability? Appearance? Fit? My current Jeep Rubicon came with 33" tires (285/70R17) on 17" wheels by comparison.

A larger wheel with that size tire would need a big lift kit. In your example a 285 70 20 tire would have a whopping 35.7" diameter. In other words it wouldn't even be a 33, it would be much bigger

I like the 20” wheels might be a Brembo bigger rotor and caliper coming out.

18 rims with 33”
20 rims with 33”
17 rims with 33”
They all the same height on stock 4 runner rim or after market rim. Their different tire widths . Going to wide on a narrow rim will destroy the tires Down the road

No LIFT

Could I go slightly bigger at 275 55 20 (which is 31.9" diameter)
This change would stay below the 4% increase in diameter (at 1.3%) and width (at 3.8%).
Waste of money and time

I have to ask. Did you go with the 275 55 20 ? Did you consider a 265 60 20 for more sidewall? I'm interested in the same thing and am curious if you have taken a leap.
