I followed the all-new 2024 Tacoma 4th gen launch closely last year because I was potentially interested in buying one, and this was one of the first owners who posted on Tacoma4g. He just posted his 1 year review and it should reassure anyone worried about the reliability of the 2025 4runner 6th gen. Remember too that the 4Runner is built in Japan, which potentially makes it even more reliable and higher build quality.

Here's the 1 yr Tacoma owner review - https://www.tacoma4g.com/forum/threads/1-year-ownership-review.10005/

I'm sure Toyota tried hard with these new Tacomas, Tundras, 4Rs, LCs and GXs. They have a lot riding on them proving to be reliable.

I do think however that the jury is still out on longevity and durability under hard use.

While I don't think there's any way that the new 2.4 turbos will be averaging as many miles as we've seen on the 4.0 V6s, they are upgraded in other important ways and one can't have everything. I'm actually more concerned about other components. I've seen references to failures where the suspension mounts to the frame, and that might be a big deal because it's not just a part you can upgrade. Also seen references to Toyota moving to lighter duty transfer cases and other components.

I think we're going to need 2-3 years before we really know.

EDIT: The forum deleted my link, feels like censorship of bad news lol. So editing this post to re insert it: https://www.tacoma4g.com/forum/thre...-road-while-offroading.3357/page-3#post-85963

FWIW, Consumer Reports gave the 2025 Tacoma a predicted below average reliability rating. The 2024 Taco was given a below average reliability rating, with downgrades in its transmission, steering and suspension, and noises/creaks. CR gave the 2025 4R a predicted above average reliability rating.

2017-2023 Tacos all have above average to well above average reliability ratings, so hopefully the 2024 Taco rating is due to first year jitters. We'll have to wait and see how the 2025 Tacos and 4Runners fare.

Consumer Reports is ridiculous.

I hope they are reliable. I purchased (or have a deposit) on a 4Runner after owning Fords for 30 years. I was ready to buy a Chevy Tahoe until I found out about a huge issue with engines blowing up. I then got close to getting a Ford Explorer ST and found out about the V6’s blowing inlet valves plus my local Ford dealerships suck. Then I looked at Mazda, cx-90. Gorgeous inside but have gearbox issues.

So, I decided on Toyota and hope for reliability over 200k plus miles with just routine maintenance.

I also agree with the last poster, Consumer Reports are not good and I would not trust them.

I purchased a 2025 SR5 Gas version and the build quality seems amazing to me. I hear a lot of worry over the newer trnamission and turbo 4. This is a good video going over the engineering and components.

Had mine fir a while now. Overall, happy with the quality and function.
I had a rental Ford Explorer Platinum for a week. Only 2000 miles on it. This was the car I was close to buying. In short, glad I didn’t. It was noise, rattles everywhere and a poor fit and finish.

I hope the 4R holds up and not develop rattles in a year which many vehicles do.

What was more reliable than the Gen 1 22RE fuel-injected 4cly? I got 450,000 out of that motor, which ran well when I sold it. It went through a couple of timing chains because of those old plastic guides. I replaced it with a 2004 Gen 4 V8, which my daughter is still driving and has 350,000 miles. My 2020 Gen 5 V6 felt underpowered in a good way, but handling was horrific compared to previous Gens. With only 1K into the Gen 6, I have no reservations about the quality of the hybrid/turbo powerplant. Toyota 4Runner has always over-delivered.

Every new model that has been constructed from the ground up with new battery, turbo, and electronic tech will have gremlins. The good thing with Toyota and several Japanese OEMs is that through their 'Kaizen" philosophy, they perfect their cars over the years. Hence why Toyota doesn't refresh their models every couple years. They spend the time perfecting, just like they did the 5th gen and all the gens prior. That's where their reliability comes in. The model year 26s will be infinitely more reliable than the 25s and so on.

Toyota didn't pull this out of new cloth. The tech has been available in other models for some time. A lot of kinks were worked out with the Rav and Tacoma. And, then there is the luck of the draw. You can have two identical vehicles: Cain and Abel. The only thing I know for sure is that if Toyota makes it better, I'll be getting one.

It's relatively new on these chassis with a ton of different chips differing between models. So ya, they fixed most of the gremlins on the Tacos over the past year so the 4Rs didn't have as many. You can count on Toyota perfecting it.

Has that new PRO been good to you? I just hit 1K and will have the early oil change on Thursday morning. While it is up in the air, and after the oil change, I will put the new skid plate on. I have been trouble-free, but it is early.

Ya, so far so good. I only have 400 miles on it though. It should be good to you. Don't put negative energy in the air. LOL.

Be honest, your new truck is the best 4Runner you have ever driven. The steering and the power of this Gen 6 Hybrid are impressive. Do you have a roof rack or rails on that beast?
