Weird hatch back behavior

Has anyone tried to open the hatch back with the back window rolled down? I forgot that the window was down today when I tried to open the hatch. The hatch unlocked and started to open but stopped. Pressing buttons had no effect. I could manually open the hatch which didn't feel like a good idea. Still no response from any buttons. Turning the vehicle off and on again had no effect. Ultimately, I pushed it closed and all was back to normal. I was able to roll up the window and open and close the hatch normally. Feels like a bug to me. Of course, the simple solution is "don't do that".

This is normal. The power lift gate only operates manually if the window is down.

It’s super weird but as @Dead Horse noted it’s the normal behavior. I’m guessing it’s a safety thing in case something (or someone) is hanging out the window and someone activates the power gate.

I’m guessing this is a safety feature. If we put something big in the window…let’s say a kayak. Opening the back door might not work so well.

Thanks for posting this. I had the exact same thing happen and wasn’t sure if it was normal. Same feeling too when I started to manually open that it felt like I might break something. I ended up turning the car off and on and then using the button in the front of the car to close the gate. I rolled the window up and then everything was back to normal.

It makes sense as a safety feature but it seems to me that it should just not let you open the lift gate at all rather than starting and then stopping.

"normal" behavior... found out the hard way: window can be rolled down 1 mm and it will do it.....
Wish it had a few inches of forgiveness... I like to drive w/ the back window cracked in cooler days.
Currently not possible ???

I fell for this too, figured it out before the dealer trip though.

I'm a dolt and have done it a half a dozen times, even tho I know the window has to be closed.

Another word of caution, with the gate up, watch how far you stick your feet underneath, I actually activated the gate trying to lift something heavy out and it almost ate me. It closed almost halfway, it was almost a thing.
