Hello All,
Is it possible, in our hybrids, to over-ride the engine shut down and eliminate the start-stop "feature" when coming to a stop? There are situations that I would like to keep the engine running at a stop.

thanx in advance,

willie

Easy answers: sport mode or switch to manual shift mode (and set to gear 8) works for me.

I'm curious why you'd want this.

personally i do this during the cold snaps in ND, when its below zero, i rather run the engine and keep the heat inside the cabin as warm as i can keep it.

I believe it is detailed in the owners manual. Your best bet would be hitting the tow/haul button - gives you more torque also. I’ve noticed the vehicle going electric only in sport mode, but never in tow/haul mode.

In the manual (Page 70) states:

Conditions in which the gasoline engine may not stop

- When the “TOW HAUL” switch is on
- When the “MTS” switch is on
- Vehicles with part-time 4WD: When the front-wheel drive control switch is in “4H” or “4L”
- When the front-wheel drive control switch is in “4H” or “4L”
- Vehicles with full-time 4WD: When the front-wheel drive control switch is in “H4L” or “L4L”
- When braking (regenerative braking)
- When the hood is opened during "READY” indicator is illuminated
- When repeatedly accelerating/decelerating rapidly
- When repeatedly operating the hybrid system for a long time
- When driving down a long slope

Do hybrids have a button on center console to disable the feature like my gas only Limited does? I also dislike the feature and was turning it off every time I got in the vehicle. Then I installed this and haven't had to touch it ever since.

Nope, hybrids don't get this button.

I don't understand why anyone would care on a hybrid

unless the 4runner is so wildly different in HVAC and efficiency than a rav4

rav4 manages any requested heat from the AC by simply running
the engine to maintain a set temp when residual temp drops.
don't need to trick it, it will start ICE when needed

'off the line' the electric motor is much quicker off the line
than ICE only automatic trans [and not as slow as an ICE start/stop system]

Yeah my hybrid 4Runner spends all its time in Wisconsin and Ontario and the heat works just fine. But the auto off feature seems to turn the engine off a lot less in the winter too. Now in terms of reliability, who knows if its something that will wear out prematurely but as you eluded to, Toyota has been doing this hybrid thing a long time so I am not concerned.

Hello again all,
Okay, today I was able to experiment with my Platinum runner and here is what I experienced;
First I tried the easiest which was sport mode and neither sport or sport+ kept the engine running at a stop. I did not try the manual +- suggestion.
Second, as recommended by yakalak (and rightfully so as the manual stated) when at a stop with the engine off, I went into Tow-Haul and Yup, engine came on and worked very well and also as stated, torque was exceptional leaving from a stop which is exactly what I wanted.
A question was posed about just why would one want to keep the engine running...well, for a couple of reasons; the first being if some knot head pulls up along side me at a stop and gives me some crap, I want to give him all I got which means I dont want the engine off when I stomp on the gas and I want the full torque available...hehe. Second, the continual start stop is a bit annoying and more aware in this vehicle than any other hybrid I have experienced but this second reason is minor to the first and I am getting more used to it and have decided not to let it bother me.
thanx all for contributing here, love this forum and all the objective contributions...look forward to learning more n more about this fantastic 6g 4runner!

fyi; I come from a Rav4 hybrid and the start-stop transition in hardly noticeable and my friend has a new hybrid Camry and very hard to notice the transition in it as well.

hehe...most young drivers wont understand this but those of us that grew up in the 60's racing from stoplight to stoplight on the street...well, we understand it all too well...YMMV, hehe.
