The OEM camera plugs directly into a factory connector above the controls by the rearview mirror. There's no separate wiring harness.

Personally have the OEM camera because it was the one olive branch I gave the dealer when negotiating new, and I knew I wanted some sort of dashcam so figured I'd give it a shot. It does the job, I do like it's placement and design and I honestly never notice or think about it.

That being said, if it were not installed to begin with I would have researched elsewhere for an aftermarket set and just done the install in a similar placement. Not being able to connect a rear camera is a big con for me and I feel like retrieving the footage could be more seamless (granted I have no other experience to compare to but in today's world the app feels clunky to me).

All that to say it's currently not worth me removing it for a new set. I might swap it out in the future so I can add more cameras as a system, but it's staying put for now.

My 2 cents:

My 4Runner came with it installed at the port. Does it do what a dash camera should - yes. Are there better options - absolutely.

What I dislike about the oem camera is it has to be connected to WiFi in order to retrieve/view any video on your phone. I know all aftermarket cams also require this but I’ve had issues connecting to the oem camera reliably. I have not needed it *knock on wood* but the videos I have looked at seem to be very clear.

Other issue is I can not have brow tinting with the oem camera due to the space between the camera and rear view mirror housing. But admittedly this is more of a cosmetic thing not necessarily a deal breaker.

I do want a bumper cam mainly for when I’m on trails etc. (live viewing) and may go the Wolfbox route, I have just been lazy and not pulled the trigger. One issue I see with other cams for a rear view is tinting on the rear window (I have limo tint all around) - but this can be avoided with mounting it on the exterior (possible issue running wires inside). Again, I’ve been too lazy to actually order it and install but I plan to.

I have the Fit Cam X (bought on Black Friday for 25% off) and I don’t Even notice it’s there. Install can be a bit tricky, but happy with the look/4k video quality.
