Waste of money running anything over 87, a dollar a gallon or more. Just change the oil at 5k intervals and everything will be ok
Yeah...changing oil every 5k for any but harsh dusty conditions is a waste of money as well.. Rule of thumb...do what the manual says to the letter and you won't go wrong.

toyota is notorious for loud injector tick. its been a staple since the way back when (before 2010 at least).

i can tell when a toyota is started just by the injector tick from my next door neighbor 2022 4R and the neighbor across the street taco

I drive my SR5 in Sport mode all the time...I really like the engine sound (for a 4-cylinder). I don't care for the sound in other drive modes, but I'm always in Sport.

Regarding octane, there's video of a shop running this motor on a dyno with 87 and 91 and they claim 20 more HP. Apologies, I don't have the link handy, but easy to find, and worthy of this debate.

Octain rating, pro's and cons have been discussed in many other forum posts. It's probably fair to say, it's unrelated to injector noise. Everyone has an opinion and can spend money where they want, I prefer data driven decisions. . Not needing the claimed additional HP, I'll run 87 100%. I think using tier 1 gas probably has more benefits than Octane level used.

On the noise, I added the hood insulation and it may have helped a little, not much.

Haters gonna hate, but running 93 premium gas makes all vehicles run better, especially under load.
I agree...ran it in my GTI and it ran better than with 87. My 4 runner will not be getting it. My GTI got 36 mph on the highway and 30 in the city and was very quick...it earned 93! All high octane gas did was make it a little peppier and increase throttle response. 4Runner is plenty peppy enough for a truck running 87. Not paying another $19 a tank to make it more peppy.

Brumey, would you use higher octane if it did, in fact, raise power?
Nope.... My goal for this vehicle was not power, towing, etc. If I wanted or needed more power, I'd have gotten a different vehicle. Saying that, I think the 4R is plenty powerful, even in Eco. If I need to tow, I have an F350 diesel. If I want fast, I'd opt or a Porsche 911. As you can see, I buy a vehicle for a purpose and not try to change it.

Plus, as mentioned in other threads, I had a Ford Escape 2.0 Ecoboost. I fell for the "get high octane" thing and did so for 10 years. I changed to 87 and actually got 2MPG's better and no noticeable loss of power.

Yeah...I can tell you a VW GTI drives a bunch better on 93 octane...no difference in MPG...very noticeable throttle response difference. Not all turbos are the same though. I agree with you though. Don't need my 4 Runner to be as quick as a GTI. Just enough power to merge and pass.

RE: 93 Octane
I have been running it in my SR5. It may be a waste, but... my likely flawed logic is running 93 octane in my SR5 during break-in at least is that it gives me the most stable combustion and consistent performance while the engine is still seating and adapting. The 2.4T is designed to run fine on 87, but its knock control strategy will pull timing under certain loads on lower octane. Higher octane doesn’t add power by itself, but it does reduce the chance of the ECU needing to reduce timing to prevent knock, especially on long highway pulls or in hot conditions. It’s not required, and I may go back to 87 later, but for break-in and long road trips, I prefer the smoother, more predictable behavior on 93.

RE:OP
FWIW, my motor sounds a lot like yours. Phone recordings tend not to do it "justice"... in terms of all the knocks, toots, whistles/whines, tweets and everything in between. I am also trying to get used it. AND... getting the hood insulator. 😂

Can you provide data that state' that in a factual form? Toyota state 87 oct
If you live where it is flat go right ahead and run the cheap stuff, but your turbo engine will have carbon build up in a few years. Where I live in the mountains and hills the vehicle is always under some sort of load. 91-93 gasoline works great to maintain performance. Toyota says 87 so you have to get a carbon cleaning at some point and at the same time be appealing to those that want to run the cheapest gasoline. Probably because Dave Ramsey said so. LOL
