My 3 month old donut had some pretty deep grooves. I cleaned it with a sponge and rag and they did not come out. I purchased a take-off SR5 wheel and Yok tire off eBay. I'm pretty sure it has grooves too since it's been there for almost 3 months too. I would like to find a solution soon. I'm planning on upgrading to larger all terrains and will have to buy 5. Need to protect that investment.

You could probably zip tie some pool noodles or put some foam pipe covers up there or something.

So I have this spare, super thin sheet of plastic (was a ugly colored photography light box backdrop). Decided to give it a try. Given how thin it is, not sure if it will do much, but what the heck, its a free attempt:

Something interesting to note, I put this tire on last night and have not driven my 4Runner since installing it as the spare, and when I took it down to put this plastic sheet up, it already had the 4 wear marks where it hits the bar.

Honestly, I'm not surprised, given how thin that piece of plastic is.

I agree that someone needs to come up with a fix. It needs to be thin, but strong enough to distribute the force applied and not deform. I'm wondering if a piece of u channeled aluminum attached to the stock top bar wouldn't be a better solution. Even if it was held in place with a few zip ties, to keep from coming off when the tire is down but would ultimately be held in place by the tire when it's up.

If someone made this, I'd buy it.

this is all cosmetic

Toyota has been chaining the spare for years and years on many models
it makes dents in the sidewall that do 100% zero harm, it is only cosmetic

I just dropped my 2013 Tacoma spare tire this morning to top up
the air, it has 2 sets of dents from being squished up against the underside

it looks bad, but there is no crack or rub through on the sidewall, it's
just a stain in the rubber.

Mine was like a half pipe in the sidewall. The dealership I purchased the car from replaced the tire no questions asked. It's just going to happen again in 6 months but maybe there will be a fix by then. From what I could tell the combination of being over 50 psi for 6 months and overtightened made the tire decay faster than normal

Agreed. I thought it was a much bigger issue based upon the amount of traffic it was seeing here but in the end the marks wiped off my spare when I dropped it and I'm sure the dents would disappear after a few rotations of being driven. In the end obviously I can tell folks "you do you" but I think if it was an issue that was ruining spare tires it would have a little more visibility than just the 22 posts in this thread.

Especially if it's just on the inside of the tire.

Aren't 4Runner's spare wheels mounted face up, meaning the dents would be on the outside sidewall of the tire? I know my full-size spare on my Trailhunter is like this.

face up
so valve is protected from scrapes or debris
and the holding bracket doesn't scrape the face of an alloy wheel
