Isn't subwoofer non-directional? If it's coming from the subwoofer then you shouldn't be able to tell it's from the rear.

I’m also wondering if this could be related to the ANC system and whether it’s experiencing some kind of glitch. From what I understand, it uses microphones to detect cabin noise and then plays inverse sound waves through the speakers to cancel it out. The rumble I’m hearing is coming from the rear‑right area, which also happens to be where the factory subwoofer is located (for my case anyway since I have the JBL).

I don't have a Carista OBD2 module so I can't turn it off and verify it.

Not entirely sure, as this is outside my limited understanding of how the system works. It was just a thought I had, and it seems other users have noticed something similar.
I took the vehicle out the other day and it was completely quiet—no rumbles or anything unusual.

I have the same exact noise coming from my 4Runner hybrid too. Sounds like it's coming from the back right side, just behind the back seat.

Things I can confirm after hearing it on multiple occasions:
  • It increases in volume when I go faster speeds.
  • The noise only happens when it's cold like about ~30 deg F...so I wonder if it has to do anything with the hybrid battery system.

I just disabled ANC with Carista and will update if it resolves the issue.

I haven’t heard the rumbling noise since I disabled ANC/ESE over a week ago. Not long enough to know for sure but so far so good.
Yes, since disabling ANC/ESE I have not heard the rumbling noise either.

Purchased Carista to disable the dreadful ESE fake engine noises and hopefully eliminate the rear rumbling noise by disabling ANC.

With ESE disabled, can finally hear what our ORP actually sounds like. Yay!

With ANC disabled, I believe the rumbling noise has stopped. Haven't driven much yet, so will keep an ear out for it.
