Rotation of tires at 5k service? I wanted my spare to get in rotation. Serviceperson was smug and did not want to, full of excuses…. But my spare is getting rotated I stayed my course. How many people forget to rotate the spare tire? You should as this increases the tire pkg life.

I was just thinking about this today. If it is done, how, and what is the benefit or risk? I’d definitely be curious to hear more.

This is my first 4Runner (besides the one my family had growing up but I wasn’t in charge of maintenance) and I just got a new set of tires with a matching full size spare.

just depends on the person.

i personally dont rotate the spare in due to possible directional rotation requirements.

also i really dont rotate on my 4R much anyway since i only have FT4WD so its kinda a mute point long term wise for tires since they wear pretty much even for me without rotations.

also regardless of whether you rotate the spare in or not (but on the 5th gen, the spare was a bright yellow rim so it wasnt really practical to rotate it in unless you replaced the spare with a oem wheel)

and when you lose a tire and need a replacement, you usually have to buy at least 2 on a PT4WD setup and 4 on a FT4WD. the uneven tire sizes can F U a drivetrain pretty good if the tires are out of size difference by too much due to tread wear being different between the old tires and the new one.

I dropped my spare a few weeks ago and was disappointed to see 4 large dents in the sidewall where the tire contacts the frame. I'm not sure I'd want that tire in regular use.

mine was fine. you can't tell them apart. aside from the black stem valve, the other were nitrogen filled and are green, the spare is black.

I went ahead and got a matching 275/70/18 tire when I stepped up a size. It's nice having that full size, matching spare wheel on the ORP and up trim levels. Discount Tire told me it's non issue to request a 5 tire rotation, so I'm planning to give it a try in the future.

Came across this video with a helpful rotation pattern:
5 tire rotation

I have always rotated the 5th in since I came from a Jeep JKU. And my dealership hasn’t given me any issues whatsoever. Definitely extends the life of the tires and it keeps the wear patterns pretty even if I do need to use the spare.

Got mine back today with the 5 tire rotation… The stealerships are just lazy! And they want to sell tires!

Well do you want that in a emergency? Your tire is probably just fine. It should still be under warranty….get it checked before you need it.

Truth. Rule #1, don’t go to the stealerships. I’m not even taking advantage of the free oil changes because I know they can’t be trusted in my area. They either overfilled or cross threaded skid plate bolts every time on my 5th gen. Never again.

Your correct, each person spends money differently, and consumes differently…..

Yeah I just noticed that on my 25 orp, it has a spare tire that has a wheel exactly what is on all four. My 5th gen gave me a steel wheel. So I never rotated that out. Guess I'll have to be telling the tire folks to rotate out the spare. Or I'll just take it off and put it in the back so there's no confusion or fumbling trying to get it out and then forgetting to put the tools back in the proper place and correctly so they don't rattle.
