So the new 4Runner is longer than the 5th gen 4Runner but the rear seat space has been cut down an inch or two. I was just wondering if it is noticeable now that some people on here have owned the new 4Runner for a few months.

I'm doing a lot of research but my feelings on the re-design are mixed at this point. One person pointed out that the hybrid battery is why the rear seat space is reduced. I don't know if that is true or not but sounds a bit frustrating for the non-hybrid models to be affected as well.

1. hybrid design affect the non-hv since its the same platform, just different layout.
2. the biggest effect is the seats in the 2nd row, since the way they tumble forward affects the storage space compared to the 5th gen.

the way they tumble is a 1 piece option, on the 5th gen is was a 2 piece design that saved space, you also had a more flat load space since you dont have a battery pack to worry about for those that have it, or a 3rd row option.

personally when i ordered my 5th gen, i specifically required no 3rd row

on this 6th gen, i went HV mode since i will never need a 3rd row but always want FT4WD

i could have gotten a limited but the price difference between the 2 was only about 2k so i went platinum

and the things that are optional on the limited that are standard is mostly the cost difference

platinum std : digital key, tow tech pkg, hud (n/a on limited), 2nd row heated seats (n/a limited)

Is the rear seat space usable with enough room in your Platinum? I like that model just not a fan of the blue seats.

SR5, rear seat space is just ok. No larger than my smaller Ford Escape, which is not great for a larger vehicle.

That said, its fine unless you need full size (tall) adults in the rear.

Tumble seats suck, crap design and kill cargo space.

Have you sat in the rear seat of a 6g 4Runner, either hybrid or non-hybrid?

I've had trouble finding one at dealerships and the dealerships aren't a quick drive. Also the question is for people that are living with the new 4Runner long term, not just a quick sit in the back seat.

I fit fine at 5'10" behind my own seating position. It's about 1-2 inches less legroom than the 5th gen.

I've owned my ORP since late May and often have adults in the back. It's tight for sure. I'm 6'2", anyone over 6 feet tall sitting behind me is gonna need me to move my seat forward a bit. But we manage just fine.

SR5 owned for 3 months. A 5 hour trip is the longest trip we've had an adult in the 2nd row and she is 5'9" and had no comfort issues. The 2nd row offers a few reclining postions (Straight up, slightly back and super reclines back). It seems the preference is the slightly back for the riders we've had. The legroom part can be solved with a shorter driver or passenger, but has not been a probelm with shorter trips and males over 6'. If you have dogs that ride and they are like our two (about 60lbs each) they will love the 2nd row. Super comfortable with room for each to lay down or sit up and they like being closer up. I like most wish the 2nd row was not tumble, but guessing this was to access third row seats on certian trims and or to make room for hybrid battery?

LOL. So a test drive is also for people living with a vehicle long-term, not just for the sake of going for a test drive. So sounds like you are considering buying one without first seeing one in person, I get it, I did the same thing. That said, if you are that concerned with the rear space, it would be wise to sit in one before buying, even if a bit inconvenient, Good Luck,. (Just buy it already,...LOL)

That's your advice? Advising a 60k purchase with a LOL.
I guess you missed it.

My advice is to go sit in the backseat of the vehicle before purchasing.

If 100 people on this forum told you the back seat spacing was fine and another 100 said it was insufficient, what are you going to do?

Wait, if 50 people said it is insufficient but 100 said it was fine, would you make the purchase before sitting in one for yourself?

The advice was to go sit in the vehicle if you are worried about the space in the backseat.

Any more inputs on how people are living with their 4Runners and the rear seat space?

my rear seats are permanently folded down (not tumbled) 'cuz it's my gravel bike
and mtb hauler. I treat it like a Tacoma with fully integrated cap basically.

I just picked one up the other day. I have a 13 year old and 11 year old. The 2nd row is a little on the tight side, it was my biggest (maybe only) hesitation when considering getting one. I'm 6'1'' so sitting behind the driver is a little snug. I turned off the feature that moves the drivers seat back when you turn off the vehicle so it doesn't get tighter every time the kids have to get out. I'd say it is sufficient but definitely not roomy.
