Hello,

I am just wondering what people thoughts are in getting the extended warranty for the TRD pro. I plan on keeping the Pro for at least eight or more years. Just looking for people’s thoughts.

Thanks.

Midway through signing all the papers prior to delivery, I was offered the Toyota 10 year extended warranty for $6K. I passed, my Gen 5 went 180,00 miles with no repairs, only standard maintenance. We get to the end of the paperwork and just before handing me the fob, I was offered the warranty for $4500. I asked if it was transferable if I sold it and it was. So, based on my age (about to become a young 80 yr old) AND the added value if I do have to sell AND the complexity of the new technolgy (it’s a hybrid), I took the offer. No regrets.

Perfect. Thank you.
No problem. For me, I am going to wait until I get closer to the 36k mark and decide. Getting it right away is "easier", but with interest rates as they are I didn't want that in my loan. Also, you immediately negate the factory warranty so I always feel a little shafted by that part of it.

Thanks, I have a connection at the dealership so the cost I am receiving is about $900 off. This is my 6th 4Runner and it was only my '87 that had issues. But like people have mentioned, the 6th Gen has a lot of technology that can go wrong and spending this much money, I would like to have peace of mind.

I hear ya. I will just pay cash when/if the time comes, probably from that site linked in the other thread. Might as well use up the factory warranty first. I also ended up trading in my two other vehicles I got the extended warranty on and just wasted money on them as I was still under factory mileage.

On my 8th TOYOTA and from what I recall the only repairs required on all of them combined was a tie rod on my 200k mile sequoia. That being said I did buy the extended Warrenty for just the technology which adds complexity to the reliability and is super expensive to replace. Good luck.

Thanks. It seems like there really is no right or wrong answer to this question. It is up to each individual and their risk / reward tolerance.

$900 off what. What are you paying?

How does an extended warranty "negate the factory warranty" ?

Regardless of when you purchase extended, doesn't it kick in at the end of the factory warranty ?

So a 10 year extended only extends 7 years beyond the 3yr/36k ?

Kick in at the end, no, that is the problem, it replaces and starts as soon as you sign the line. That is why when or if you ask for a refund on the extended they prorate the amount of time and mileage that has passed and refund. Then you roll back to the factory warranty if still within the range. I've done this on my last two Subarus, sadly.

Your second comment is right and the problem. You are paying for a 10year/100k warranty, e.g., but you already had 3year/36k for free. So you are paying more for less.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time, I think they are worth it, especially if you have one of the higher trims with more electronics and options. Also considering we are only in the 2nd production year for the new 6th gen. There is some very good info in the other thread mentioned above.
  • Get competitive quotes from one of the on-line resources that offer true Toyota warranties (ex: https://fd-warranty.com) and have the printout with you when negotiating with the selling dealer.
  • My on-line quotes were less than HALF of what the dealer originally quoted me. For my latest vehicle (25 Limited), dealer originally quoted $4,250 for 10yr/125 mile $0 deductible Platinum Warranty. I ended up paying $2,185.
  • I have bought 2 new Toyotas in the last 2 years from 2 different dealers. I gave both of them the chance to match the on-line quoted price to gain my business. Both of the dealers came way down to within $100-200 of the on-line quote, and I went with the selling dealers to simplify my paperwork and amortize the cost into my vehicle loan.
  • As noted above, you do not need to purchase the extended warranty now. It can be added within 36 months or 36K miles.
  • Also as noted above, the extended warranty coverage begins retroactively from the DATE OF SALE. Not from expiration date of original factory warranty. So, if you buy a an extended 10yr/120K warranty at 3yrs/36K miles, you only get an additional 7 years of warranty (not 10).
  • If you sell the vehicle (or total it), you can cancel the balance of the warranty and Toyota will refund the balance of the warranty cost (prorated).

I traded my 2021 4Runner in on a 2025. I receiver $2500 less than what I paid for it. Trading it in more frequently
might be a consideration given the high cost of the extended warranty. Plus you have the latest advancements.
I too am concerned with the potential high cost of repairs to all the new technology.
this is my 5th 4Runner and have had similar experiences with my trades. Plus no expenses with tires , brakes, or major servicing. Another saving.
