Hello all, I currently own a 2021 Off Road Premium 4Runner and am contemplating purchasing a 6th Gen, TRD Off Road Premium. My only concern is the reliability of the in line 4/Turbo, non hybrid. I have tried to research on this site for any reviews on the motor. I am hoping that there are current owners here who can add some insight into your 6th gen's, specifically opinions on your non hybrid motors. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

ugh, personally i cant stand that guy along with tundra dude 34. over the last 2 years, the voice on them has turned into a nails on chalkboard sound to me.

not to mention the other issues i have with the process/qa engineer guy, but his voice is the primary reason.

as far as reliability, that is no guarantee a vehicle will be perfect no matter the manufacturer. i have seen great ones from the big 3 and flops from toyota.

just your chances are better with toyota and as you go down the line with others.

i mean our 23 tundra is on the full block engine recall but to date we havent had an issue.

my 2014 has some screen display issues but those cleared up on their own. even had the 4R shutdown at 75mph going home one day and its never done it since.

my son had a beaten hand me down ford escort from grandpa that just wouldnt die

i had a 1980 pontiac phoenix hand me down from grandma that wouldnt die either, but man that vehicle interior was down right hideous.

but in the end, i have had more toyota's with so little issues vs any other manufacturer since 1981, and i have had a lot .....

80 Phoenix LJ (me) had a hole in the muffler pipe, i fixed it monthly with duct tape
84 Celica GT Fastback (me) eventually the trans died after 139k, sold it for the engine to some racer
84 Cressida (me) temp gauge i could tap to flat line it and fix it, would bark 2nd gear on hot days if i redlined it
87 Cressida (wife) not one issue
89 Toy Truck 2wd (wife) she slid it into a vehicle on black ice, she freaked out and let it die in gear
91 Cressida (me) not one issue
91 Cressida (wife) not one issue
93 Paseo (wife) had it in green, wife's first new car, not one issue
96 Protégé (me) sucked in ND winter driving
98 4Rv6 (me) 1st 4R used, highlander series
04 4R Sport v8 (me) 1st new 4R, not one issue
06 Taco AC v6 (wife) not one issue
07 Sonata SE v6 (me) gas tank baffles bugged the shit ouf me, got rid of the sloshing
09 Rav4 v6 (wife) the toyota version of an omni GLH, not one issue
10 Legacy 3.6R (me) not one issue, first awd vehicle ever and the same 4wd setup as a 4R limited (let me to buying a 14 4R limited)
12 Taco DC v6 (wife) not one issue
14 4R LE (me) 12 yrs, engine shut down once doing 75 mph, never happened again, otherwise never had an issue
16 Taco DC Sport (wife) not one issue, just too small cabin wise for 2 adults and 2 GSP dogs
18 Tundra CM Platinum 5.5ft 4x4 (wife) subs sucked ass, rear pass seat rubbed and squeaked against the cab
23 Tundra CM Plat 5.5ft 4x4 Non HV (wife) not one issue so far
25 4R Plat (me) subwoofer sub par but meh, 1st to 2nd gear hybrid transition wonky, 2nd row seats a downgrade from 5th gen, oh shit handles suck, otherwise everyting i was expecting

Go to the forums for vehicles that use the engine (4Runner. Tacoma, Highlander, Lexus) and see if you can find anything to worry about. There are hundreds of thousands on the road and they've been out for 2-3 years. My guess is that you won't find any common problems.

Here’s another video. Keep the oil changed, and you will be fine. I am in the habit of checking my oil due to the age of my other vehicles. I’m currently at 8,200 miles on the 4Runner, and I had the oil changed at 1k, 3k and 5k (that’s a whole other topic - early and often oil changes). However, I noticed the oil starting to break down now, so I will probably switch to changing the oil every 3-4k. Mind you, the oil isn’t black, but it doesn’t look like honey either. It might be a hassle to change oil more frequently, but it’s cheaper than a new engine.

The 2.4 turbo has been used in many Toyota/Lexus models for a few years now. In contrast to the 3.4 V6 in the Tundra, the LX and the GX it has been a reliable engine so far. Just you have to change its oil more frequently.
