So I've been having pretty consistent issues with the passive entry seeing my fob pretty much daily for months, both when I go to unlock the doors and when I'm inside the 4Runner (usually trying to turn it on after starting it remotely). I tried my 2nd fob- no improvement. I tried a new battery in the fob- no improvement. I then bought new batteries because my previous ones were a couple years old, though unused. It felt like for a few days it was much improved but subsequently it's gone bad again (took less than a couple weeks). Is there any known issue or anything I can do to improve it? I keep the fob on my left front jeans pocket with nothing else in there.
It is particularly frustrating when I get in the car and go to hit the On button (when it was started remotely) and because it doesn't see the key the whole thing turns off and I have to re-start it.

the fob has an accelerometer to wake it up
if you walk around with it all day that drains the battery fast
if you set it down and don't move it, it goes to sleep in a few minutes

so...set it down so it goes to sleep for the day and wakes up when it's moved

or shut it off by pressing and holding lock, and while pressing lock press unlock
twice then let go of both, and fob led should blink-blink,blink-blink (4 blinks)
which puts it to sleep manually

and now you can walk around and the accelerometer
wake up function is disabled...this saves battery. you will
need to press a button on it to wake it up from this off mode

I do not have a good answer to your question, but responding to a couple comments here:

My fob still works fine after a year with the original battery--no problems at all. It is in my pocket pretty much 100% of the time (and yes, I walk around a lot!).

The type of batteries used in fobs (lithium) have shelf life of at least 10 years, so unless they were stored very poorly (say, in a really hot place) 2 year old batteries should be fine. Of course anything can be defective and fail early--or it may have been old to start out. All (most?) batteries now have a "good through" date on them.
