I have the Milwaukee M18 16” saw and can cut up a whole tree on one 12ah battery. They just came out with a m18 14” top handle that would be perfect for the trail.
I recently met an architect that told me that Milwaukee was the best brand for light battery operated tools. Given that I have no good way of choosing and he's spent a career working directly with builders I would go with Milwaukee if I hadn't already bought Ryobi tools (which I've been fully satisfied with so far).

I'm also a fan of Stihl, especially for nasty 2 stroke tools. :)

@Archer I did get one of those "chain saws" you linked to and tested it a bit ago on about a 4" branch. My test subject was loose, so made it harder, but you are right--it actually works quite well! And it is *very* compact. Thanks again!

I’ve got the 14” bar top handle and I will gladly recommend that model. Compact and powerful.

I have the Milwaukee 16" for home, and agree it is excellent. Big for car use though. Their 12v "Hatchet" chain saw is much smaller and good for up to about 3" cuts (they say, can probably go slightly larger if necessary). Nice for pruning/lighter duty stuff.

New technology and developments have brought these battery powered devices a long way. Fortunately, what’s horrible one day will result in changes to remain competitive. The Green Works that I have is horrible. It leaks chain oil about as fast as you add it and will throw the chain at the smallest task. Sounds like I need to upgrade to Milwaukee. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have used Stihl saws for many years. Recently bought the small 12 inch battery
Model. Lightweight, cuts great, good for about 8 to 10 inch limbs or logs. My brother has a Makita brand that also cuts great and he uses the batteries on his other hand tools.

those little handheld’s are great. My wife loves it too for trimming shrubs and small tree limbs.
