For anyone wondering about catalytic converter theft and how easily stolen they might be, this is reassuring -- the location of the cats are tucked away and more hidden, making it harder for thieves to steal.

Here's both catalytic converter's tucked-away location:

I hadn't been under the 4Runner yet to inspect but it's reassuring to know both catalytic converters are hard to access. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the info. Love that it was done this way to prevent theft. I was told that they also have a cover for sale to slow down the thieves too. Curious to what that cover is.

its a byproduct of moving to a i4 engine vs the v6 engine.

most i4 engines have both tucked (not just the 4R or taco but most toyota i4 engines). the v6 the way the config was, they had no room to tuck them.

yeah i guess but thats due to mostly the 2000's model years

recent years they packed them closer to the engine (if i remember correctly), but then again prius is more battery than engine so less room to properly tuck them.

:)

I just recently purchased an anti-theft cover or shield for it and planning to install it. I haven't looked underneath my 6Gen yet. So, is it not necessary to install a security cover?

The security cover is a good idea if you’re concerned about someone stealing the catalytic converter. I have a “Port” installed cover on my TH that is actually riveted to the frame. I recently installed an AWE Cat-Back exhaust, and not wanting to drill out the rivets, this easily added 3-4 hours to the process. It was very difficult working in the spaces available and that was only to the converter/exhaust connection you see in the first picture. You can’t get the converter out through the space available so would-be thieves would have to drill out the rivets and remove the cover before getting to the converter/exhaust connection . From there, they would have a difficult time just getting to the converter- it really is tucked away nicely and attaches at the top. Pretty sure this is going to frustrate and deter most thieves unless they really like a challenge and want to spend an extended amount of time wrenching under some stranger’s truck.

Thanks, I plan on installing the cover. It sounds like it's more likely I'll drive away, leaving any thief who was under the vehicle lying on the ground staring up at the sky, than they are likely to steal it.
