I understand what you mean here. On my 25 Tacoma the knob turned if you even looked at it. It required almost no pressure to move it between 2 and 4wd. My 4runner dosen't have this issue.

If your selector dial is switching between 2wd and 4wd without physically pushing the button to move it, take it to the dealership, it's broke....

Not entirely sure, but before the 4R was started. I think while loading the car and perhaps leaning across enough where my leg was obviously able to engage the dial.

Now I also check the indicator in the dash.

yes the dial has an intentional interlock and if you can spin the dial
without pushing the button in, it's busted. it's a big part which combines
the parking brake

Can you show video of how it is turning with the lock engaged? Because both can't be true.

You have to push the button in to get dial to turn to 4wd. If you can do it without pressing the button, its broken. If you are inadvertently pressing the button and turning it, that's how it is supposed to work.

the interlock button is on the right leg side, I cannot imagine
how my leg or knee or anything I am carrying
could press that button and turn the knob

maybe this guy could pull it off

You have to push the button in to get dial to turn to 4wd. If you can do it without pressing the button, its broken. If you are inadvertently pressing the button and turning it, that's how it is supposed to work.

I never said it's turning with the lock engaged.

It's not turning with the lock engaged. Only one of the lock buttons, the one on the drivers side for example, needs to be pressed for the control knob to turn. Possible while the car is not driving to accidentally press the lock button with leg and rotate the knob, for example while leaning across to the passenger side reaching and loading. Try it yourself.

I'm not complaining, just saying it's happened a few times. Now I always check when starting out to make sure I'm not in 4H.
