Helivue Design offers a no compromises approach to auxiliary fuel systems for the demands of the Commuter or hard core Overlander. This tank has been thoroughly beat, bashed, landed on and driven from 5,000-13,000 feet regularly without failure. A Lightweight, High clearance, Aluminum 18 gallon auxiliary fuel system that allows you to KEEP your KDSS, Factory Air Ride and your Class 4 receiver hitch. This system is almost completely invisible as it tucks above the bumper line and keeps all factory evap systems in place.

The Helivue Design auxiliary fuel tank fills up through your factory filler neck and will simultaneously fill both tanks at once. When you need to transfer fuel we include a high quality programmable Fuel transfer switch/fuel level gauge, quality fuel pump, and stainless steel fuel level sender. Kit includes everything you need to install including quality stainless steel clamps, stainless steel hardware and bung.

this would go great with a swing out rear mount bumper with tire mount. i mean if you are going to spend the money on a swing out rear bumper might as well go all out

In my experience these auxiliary tanks have always been a headache to maintain. The OEM CAN bus doesn’t like them (typically related to pressure differential between reservoirs), seen multiple charging system faults (i.e., pump running longer than it should, transfer pumps not operating correctly, battery failure). If I were ever to personally buy one, I’d prefer a manual pump to just directly move the fuel from the auxiliary tank to the primary tank through the OEM fill point, that way you cut out all the unreliability and have the added benefit of filling your roto packs, generators, or other equipment, etc.

But maybe this system has cracked the code on all these issues.

why would you need a class 4 hitch? the 6g 4runner is only rated to 6000 lbs which is way under a class 3 rating of 8000 lbs.

I have a 12ft cargo (6.5ft tall) that I converted to a camper. Loaded with my gear, batteries, and atv it's around 3000#. Will be picking up my 4R (gas) in a week so need to break it in before towing it into the Rockies. Was expecting 10ish, not 6 lol

Sadly it was empty and aluminum lol I would guess about 1500-2000 lbs empty. It's a 7x16 trailer.

A few factors that contributed:
1) Averaging about 75 mph on the Interstate
2) Probably had a bit of an angled headwind
3) Trailer is a bit taller so it is a big sail

So I'm sure you'd be better in the MPG department. I could have slowed down for better mileage but, I mean, I90 across South Dakota is pretty boring so it's best to do it as quick as possible hah

Thanks for the update. I also have a lead foot and with the elevation gain I now have tempered my expectations lol. Looks like my gas cans will be running double duty!

Are jerry cans and rotopax more reliable than auxiliary fuel tanks then?

too a point. as long as you cycle the gas in them i would think. i wouldnt let the gas sit in a jerry can for longer than 3-6 months (its really dependent on how well the jerry can is sealed to the outside) without a stabilizer. longer if you use a stabilizer.

thats also dependent on what octane you have in the jerry can. 91/93 octance it should be good.

i wouldnt store any ethanol gas in a jerry can period.

I was thinking of investing in an auxiliary fuel tank from Long Range America on my 3rd gen 4runner. However, I will just stick to three Jerry can setup and two rotopax, as I don't need all that fuel all the time. I will only need it twice a year.

i never looked into the rotopax containers. i am not sure of the permeability of the hard plastic vs a metal jerry can for moisture intrusion.

i guess i was wrong, rotopax tend to be better long term wise than metal jerry cans. but the cost is the deciding factor for rotopax's.

jerry cans are cheap but limited to mounting option and amount of fuel to carry and rust from the gas requiring maintenance on the interior.

rotopax are more versatile in mounting options but hold less gas per container and cost way more but wont rust and seal better

It would be nice if the aux tank just extended the oem one and go into the computer and set the tank size and the computers and guages would all just adjust properly (oem firmware update??). I would pay the 2200 for that. I pull a 4400 pound overland trailer would love extra seamless range. Otherwise Jerry Cans/Roto pax are more cost effective.
