If you bought a TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX hoping for a hands-free power liftgate, double-check what you actually got.

As many of you did and are doing. I went on the Toyota website to compare trims and features before purchasing.
One of the features I wanted was the Hands-free power liftgate.
I decided to pay the extra cost to get the hybrid and in part the power liftgate. It made it "worth it" for me. So I went and bought one.
After driving it home, it took me a few days to realize something was missing, I go back on the website and realize it's the power lift gate!
In 3 different places on the Toyota website, it shows the the TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX having a power liftgate, so I wasn't wrong.
it's not an "option" for the trim, it's a feature. It's supposed to be installed on every TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX. It's kinda like buying a trailhunter without a snorkel, they're all supposed to have it if it's listed as a "feature"
I reached out to Toyota Brand Engagement Center. The first customer agents acknowledged the mistake and told me that there will be a recourse. A few days later, another one to call me and ask me to re-explain, he also acknowledged the mistake and also stated that there will be a recourse. A week later for a 3rd agent to calls me and... asked to me re-explain, he then officially denied that Toyota did anything wrong and denied all form of compensation.
The whole process took about 3 weeks and hours on the phone.

I feel tricked, the website still (May 14th 2025) shows false advertising a month after the initial report.

edit:

-This only applies to non premium models, the toyota website makes it very clear.
-I drove 400miles to buy the car. checking to see if toyota made a mistake was the last thing on my mind when i bought the car. i just checked the exact name of the trim

If you have a non premium trd off road i force max then you most likely are missing the feature too

-regardless, I’m suing them for false advertising, which this is a pretty clear case of. 2/3 of the toyota people i talked to also admitted wrongdoing on a recorded line.

Oh wait it’s right there. It makes no sense. I have a hitch and still have hands free

So you have a mechanical/manual lift tailgate? Sorry to hear about the mixup...

Do you have a video/photos of your car?

Is it on your build sheet. I know there was a big confusion on the black exhaust tips coming on the Pro's which turns out not to be the case.

I totally forgot my ORP has this feature. From my memory of building various 4Runners, it was only the Premium and up that had the power liftgate.

When you took delivery of the vehicle, did you check to see if that option was on your vehicle prior to signing the paperwork if you did not, there’s nothing that can be done.

I’m also curious, are you talking about the power liftgate itself (as in you have a manual liftgate with gas struts) or the hands-free foot-kick functionality?

Either way if that was THE deciding factor on stepping up to that trim, I would’ve verified its existence on the vehicle before signing the paperwork. I’m not saying Toyota is in the right if they said it’s there and it’s not.

The power rear liftgate window is standard. The handsfree power liftgate is not available.

so based on the screenshot he provided, (and I checked myself on the Toyota Website), it does show that the TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX offers the hands-free power lift gate with power rear window. However, when you look at the comparison list, it shows that it is NOT available. It is a bit misleading...
