Brake controller aftermarket or are they included in all trims.

I can not find whether or not my ordered 4R has a brake controller as part of the tow package or not. I will hopefully be getting a TRD Off Road not premium. I could easily pull the Tekonsha out of my Tundra before selling it but I would need a wiring harness as it sounds like the 4R comes pre wired for an after market brake controller.

I went with the tow tech package and received a brake controller.

Interestingly: if you don’t order the AUX switch upgrade from the factory, the dash may be wired but the engine harness is missing the components to hook up the switches.

This could be the same with a Tow package depending upon if it can be installed at the port or was a factory upgrade only.

I have a Curt Bluetooth Brake Controller. Easiest thing ever. No need to install one in your 4Runner. You take care of the settings through an app on your phone. The only real purpose of the Bluetooth function is to set the proper brake settings. You can also manually brake the trailer through the app if you need to as well (or to just test the brake resistance). Piece of cake.

According to the toyota website, the tow tech package (digital rear view mirror and trailer brake controller) are not available on the sr5 and non premium trims. All the wiring exists to connect a third party controller. In this thread, they were able to find a harness for their Tekonsha controller that was compatible.

As I understand, the tow package will always include the integrated brake controller.

Seeing posts like this makes me jealous. We don't get the option to add the trailer brake controller, digital camera, or aux switches in Canada. They just aren't available unless you buy the most expensive trims(Platinum and up) which then they are standard.

Yea theres actually a lot different with how the packages are done, and even what accessories are available. Some things that are options for you, we get standard, and others we just don't get at all. Like we don't even get the Sport premium package, and the sunroof is standard on the premium package(instead of being an option).
