Hey all! I have a TRD Pro with stock suspension, wheels and tires and done 1,800 miles so far. Ever since I picked up at the dealership it had a persistent and relatively violent vibration at 70 mph or above and got worse (shaking the whole car) if you let off the gas and coasted.

Toyota dealer said they checked and found no issue (surprise surprise) and that’s how it is with offroad tires. So I took it to Discount Tire to get the wheels balanced and they confirmed that three wheels were off by +/- 2 ounces.

It was better but didn’t fix the issue, so I found another tire shop that had the Hunter Roadforce balancer. Just completed and it made it even less violent, but there’s still a shimmy at 74 and above.

Anyone else having an issue? Or have an idea what might be causing the vibration?

I bought a 94 Camaro Z28 new that had a vibration. Over 70 it would start and just keep getting worse. The local dealership balanced the tires (Camaros don't have meaty tires like the 4Runner) and it did nothing. When I brought it back they said "the speed limit is 65 so we can't test it beyond that speed to confirm it".

I called Chevy and they found a different dealership (who also would drive it fast enough to test it) but they at least had no problems doing multiple things to try and fix it. They never got it perfect but the one thing they did do that help the most was replace the driveshaft. Hopefully your dealer can sort it out.

Have them check your alignment, also have discount tire to make sure you Toad force numbers are below 20. The may have to wheel match the tires where they turn to wheel and tire to line up with the heavy/light spots are.

Unfortunately, my Pro also has the tire vibration at around 70 mph. Given the size of the tires, it’s not altogether surprising that Toyota couldn’t get them balanced well. Obviously shouldn’t have to take a new vehicle somewhere to get tires balanced, but I have a local shop that has technicians experienced with road force balancing where I’ve had success a few times in the past. I’ve never had success with my local Discount Tires and will not use them again. Hoping to find time to get mine done soon. Good luck everyone with this problem.

Thanks for sharing. I may try another Toyota dealer to at least have it noted that the issue is still ongoing. I’ll share any updates if I find a solution.

Thanks will try for an alignment at a Toyota dealership. Not sure I’ll be going back to Discount Tire.

I have used Discount Tire in 3 different states and 10s of different cities over the last 25 years and have had nothing but good experiences at all of them.

Could I get the specs of your tires, including load class? S,C,E ect. and the PSI you are running cold before driving in the morning..
Sure.
Stock tires are: Toyo Open Country A/Ts
size: 265/70R18
load rating: 116H (for maximum load capacity of 2,756 pounds per tire, and maximum speed of 130 mph)
running 33psi (cold) per the recommendation on the door sticker.

Keep in mind the Toyo's that come standard are not the same that are bought from places like Discount Tire. They are a lesser quality which are made for car manufactures. I would have to guess the alignment is the issue. I had the same issue with my 2020 which was actually a mixture of the tires and alignment.

It says E4.

Took it in to a local dealership this morning to do alignment, and after 2-1/2 hours the verdict was......it is within alignment specs and (even though the tech's test drive confirmed the vibration/shake starting at 70mph and a slight pull to the right) it is deemed to be "normal" for these offroad tires. Otay!!! Never had this issue before with Falkens or Nittos.
It may be time for some different tires.

Its that cheaper line of tires that manufactures get. If you took at the tread depth of the factory toyo open country at3's they appear to have only 40 % of the actual tread. The toyo's from places like discount tire have a 16/32 of tread.

If the tire is an E load range and thick side walls, the tires might need some more PSI. Those tires have a maximum PSI of 80. I ran 42 PSI cold (middle of the night cold) in my E load 18" Wildpeak AT4s and Yokohama Geolandar GO15 tires on a Tundra to eliminate the wobble from 50-60 mph. In extreme heat of 95º on the highway they only expanded to around 50 PSI plus or minus. BUT, the wobble was gone. It took having them balanced and everything all over town until a Toyota dealer master tech recommended that I try more PSI a little at a time until perfect. This is just typical of ten ply E load tires. NOTE: I have had KO2s that could never be balanced which is why I don't purchase them.

On my 25 4Runner I run 275/70/17 C load range Wildpeak AT4 tires with 6-ply side walls. They have no issues at OE tire pressure. After the Yokohama Tire Purchase back in 2021 I buy all my tires at Discount Tire with certificates and get alignments at the Toyota Dealer. The certificates will save you if they can't get the tire balanced. They will work on it until they do or replace the tires for free. Great customer service.
