I' ve been driving a Trailhunter for 3 weeks now. I drove around a non hybrid 4runner TRDORP yesterday (again) and my statement is :

- non hybrid is quite good on take off acceleration and response. Plenty capable and acceptable for today's standards and impressive 4banger.

- Hybrid is next level in response and power delivery. YOU FEEL the torque on daily driving: Passing is an ultra confident effort in tight situations.

Good info, just wish we could get some drag races between them also. I dont think that power is worth its weight gain.

8.7% increase in horsepower to weight ratio and 37% increase in ft lbs torque to weight ratio makes it an easy choice for me.
I feel you, but at a nearly 500 lb increase, 8% isnt enough for me. Soon we will be tuning these engines and turning up the turbos and higher flowing exhausts to make up that power difference. I would rather be lighter and less potential electrical issues in exchange for the extra low end grunt for now. really id just rather the v6TT in our trucks haha

It is actually 375lbs, but I definitely understand why someone would want to save weight. Especially if you are adding bumpers and armor.

Also it is the huge increase in torque that makes it worth the extra 375 lbs to me.

You're too focused on the 8%. HP isn't the only measure of performance, especially in an application like ours. That torque gain is what makes it worth it, and the weight isn't as high as you think.

I know hp is just an equation of torque but the torque isnt as broad or consistent as id like, i know its largest bump in tq is in the common cruising rpm. When i drove the land cruiser it felt like such a slug, maybe the battery didnt have enough charge or maybe it reacts differently to 87 octane or perhaps that is tuned differently then the taco/4runner hybrid but that test drive helped me decide on nonhybrid. But also 375lb is about 3 adults worth the weight and for me i can certainly tell when their are 3 adults in my car.

In reality, you get a power boost due to the 2.4 being a higher compression turbo engine.

It can take advantage of the increased octane rating.

Stillen is a great company, I think it boils down to the tune, hence why these guys can improve performance "electronically". Stillen is an excellent company with a long pedigree of racing. Rod and Steve Millen started out racing RX3s in New Zealand. They were affiliated with Mazda race teams for a long time throughout their careers and are now "Toyota" guys. The hold (or did) records for Pike Point and various other accolades.

Very cool guys. The real highlight of their racing careers was with Nissan in the '90s with the Clayton Cunningham prepared IMSA 300ZX. They were the fastest cars in IMSA class, dominating every year until they were essentially outlawed.

Steve placed first in class at LeMans and 5th overall, won the 12 Hrs of Sebring, and alongside their team mate John Morton and Johnny O'Connell, absolutely upset the teams that had been dominating GTS before their entry. Was one of the coolest era's in auto racing.
