Toyota has turned the driver's seat from its Crown model into a limited-run office chair for the Japanese market. Only 70 units will be available, but don't feel too bad about missing out, because the chair will cost ¥495,000—the equivalent of $3,500.
A collaboration between Toyota Boshoku, the group that makes Toyota interiors, and office furniture brand Itoki, the Crown office chair takes the actual seat from the luxury sedan and places it on a wheeled base for desk use. It features power adjustments for recline and vertical position, along with lumbar support drawn from the original car seat design. It's also said to incorporate heating and ventilation. The seatbelt buckle is even cleverly repurposed as a USB-C charging port.
Preorders are currently taking place through a Japanese retailer aptly named The Crown. If there are more preorders than available units, prospective buyers will be selected through a lottery, Notebookcheck reports.
Toyota has long promoted the Crown's seating comfort and hip-point height as major strengths for long drives, and this product brings those ideas into daily desk use. That said, its limited quantity, high price, and probable lottery make this item more of a collector's piece than a practical furniture choice.
