This cannot happen to my 3rd gen, and cannot happen to my 6th gen either thanks to the DCM Bypass kit.
I'm confused. Your news link states Toyota has removed app based remote start from vehicles in Germany due to their law against unnecessary vehicle idling, yet disabling your DCM does the same thing:
"Most of your vehicles safety features and Navigation options will not be impeded by installing this adapter but you may lose features that depend on communication with Toyota. An example will be the cloud-based/phone app factory remote start."

What's your end gain?

oh ok no problem then.

I can start my vehicle before getting in it just fine, with the key fob. And the point is that whatever features, functions, and behavior I have right now, even if that didn't happen to include remote start, no one but me can change them.

That's a story about Germany and does not affect the United States. When I get off the airplane and know my vehicle is going to be out in the parking lot completely covered in snow and ice I want it to be drivable the second I get to it, so I remote start it with the app as I'm picking up my luggage. Works great. Since I don't live in Germany I could care less what they do.

A lot of people don’t know the extent of the vehicle’s data tracking, or don’t care.

I de-consented and disabled Connected Services on day 1. There’s also a hardware DCM bypass you can install if you don’t trust the software-level disablement.

But some people value the Connected Services features enough to pay both the price in cash (monthly subscription) and data, all personal preference!

Do you have a link for the hardware DCM bypass, I'd definitely like to do that...

I just talked about cancelling a private jet with my wife (because I didn't win with the lottery ticket haha) Hold and Behold, I'm starting to get private jet rental adds in gmail... Yeah Big brother is watching/listening.

I'll be keeping My connected services because I'm not paranoid and I'm not a drug kingpin. Lol . Another feature I enjoy, I often leave my 4Runner at an airport in Colorado for weeks at a time. Once the airliner has landed I remote start it so it's not 5° when I get inside. Another reason, I start it several times a week when I'm away to charge the battery. Of course you can do without these features, but the paranoia about tracking is only for people doing something they probably shouldn't be doing. Your streaming services, your cell phone everything else tracks you so why not your car? Not to mention when driving through sketchy Alabama and some of those States, if it gets stolen you can find its location.

I am not a drug kingpin, (And if I was I wouldn't state it here lol) but I know Car Makers sell your driving info to insurance companies, and store them, I won't install it right away, I'll wait for the (1 or 2) year free subscription to end, then I will lose the ability to remote start/locate anyway, so it's a losing situation, I get nothing out of it, and Toyota still gets to sell my data. Then I'll install it.

That's my plan.

You do you! But the implication that you only care about your privacy footprint if you're a drug kingpin or paranoid is daft. You can value remote start more than your approximation of the cost of reduced privacy, and that's fine. For me, Connected Services has 0 value, so there's no reason to pay that cost.

My phone provides a lot of value, so I pay the minimal privacy cost possible there (by managing my settings accordingly). Not to mention, I trust Apple to handle data appropriately a lot more than Toyota, and their respective track records reinforce this differential. The assertion that all data sharing is equal (or equally damaging) is intellectually dishonest.

I was just kidding obviously. But everything tracks you nowadays. But I paid $75,000 for this 4Runner because of the features. But of course everyone has the right to do what they want and to opt out. I have a starlink mini mounted in the spaces between the roof rack rails for internet in the backcountry. Pretty sure that scumbag Elon musk following me around LOL.

Exactly. I installed the dcm bypass.

I never even made an account or installed the app or activated anything even once. The sales guy couldn't get over it, thought it was actually physically required. He actually went to his manager to find out what to do since I just kept saying "no, I do not have to do that".

Thank you, yes this is the kit. I was posting from my phone at the time.

You can reach all the connectors pretty easy without taking too much apart. Google up the youtube video about putting a usbc jack in the center console, that is hands down the best directions for taking the center console apart around the shift lever. Includes the secret to getting the shif knob off. Then DCM plugs are all right behind the vertical front wall where the phones rest. There is a tacomaworld post about it and it's almost identical.
