I just saw this video on YouTube and thought I'd share. I've owned trucks before my 4Runner and have always added bigger tires than stock and have never ran into this kind of issue. Then again, I admit I never gave gear ratio much thought because admittedly, I am not mechanically savy, but with my 4Runner, I find myself doing a bunch of DIY mods.

So, does adding bigger tires(and lift kits) truly require re-gearing? Just thought I'd pick ya'lls brains to gain more knowledge and do things right.

This is something I’ve thought about as well, especially with the added weight and moving up in tire size.

I ultimately ended up with tires that are just under a true 35, which is usually where re-gearing starts to become part of the conversation for 4Runners. I’m running Toyo R/T Trail 295/75R17s in a C load. I also have the enhanced spicy OTT tune, a cold air intake, and an upgraded turbo inlet.

So far, I haven’t had any issues for daily driving and medium trails. That said, I do understand that the tune and supporting mods don’t truly replace gearing, especially when you’re off-road and need low-speed torque/control.

I regeared my '88 Toyota PU once I went to 33's (4:88's). I actually was able to use 5th gear again until I went to 35's.
I probably will not go much bigger than the current 32.6's on my ORP but remain attentive to what others find for gear ratios.

If you are running real heavy (E load rated) tires 35" plus, a regear would help with performance but hurt top speed. 3rd gen Tacomas all needed a regear just to run 33"s. LOL
