Proper Parking Brake Procedure

Forgive my ignorance but is there a recommended procedure for applying and disengaging the parking brake? When parking, should I apply the brake while in drive and then put it into park or is it sufficient to simply put it in park and have the rig auto apply the parking brake? Same question in reverse order when going from park to drive.

I am specifically asking for the health of the vehicle. Not sure what would put less strain on the pin over the rig’s lifespan. any guidance here would be appreciated.

It sets the parking brake automatically when you put it in park, and it takes it out automatically while you take it out of park. Just hold your foot on the brake when taking it in and out of park.

I appreciate the responses. I know that the vehicle will automatically apply the parking brake. I’m asking specifically about whether I should put the car in neutral, apply the parking brake, and then put it into park.

I’m asking because I’ve read that that’s the way to keep the pressure off the parking pawl/pin to protect the transmission over the long run. Is this procedure built into the vehicle or should the driver manually perform this?

If the parking brake is automatically applied when you put it in park before you take your foot off the brake, how is that different than if you put the parking brake manually before you take your foot off the brake.

The key to protect the pawl is to only take your foot off the brake after the parking brake is applied(automatically or manually) so the vehicle doesn’t roll against the pawl.

The only thing that matters is when you take your foot off the brake, not how you chose to apply the parking brake.

the procedure is in the manual to turn off PKSB and the auto parking brake.

i have both turned off during the winters up here in ND

PKSB throws up an orange icon when you turn it off, the auto parking brake just turns off the green "brake" icon that normally shows up when engaged

I Just don't take my foot off of the brake pedal until I see the parking brake apply by itself when I shift into park indicated by the park light on the instrument cluster. The whole idea is to not let the vehicle roll onto the parking pawl (pin) and be subjected to all of the vehicle weight onto that little pin when you put it into park. When I put it into park I just wait until I see the Park light iluminate before I take my foot off of the brake pedal.

Why are you asking them? That is what they are asking whoever might know, is exactly that.

If you know for a fact that there is no difference because you have been inside the trans and can show what happens in both cases, in all possible conditions like hills or cold oil or idling etc, the why are you asking them what's the difference instead of telling exactly how you know there is no difference?

If you don't know for a fact, then why are you saying anything at all other than "I believe ..."?

The answer is most likely exactly as you suggest, but it was a reasonable question. I can imagine ways that the mechanism could be designed that would make those two cases different. If you can't, then I submit that suggests you are in no position to try to answer such a question, as you didn't even understand it, worse, didn't even understand that you didn't understand it.
