Need help! 285/70/17 versus 285/75/17 tires

Hi,

I need some help deciding what tires I am going to put on my new 4Runner Off road premium. I am planning to do the Westcott 2.5/0.75in lift and method 703 +35 offset. I don’t really want to have to trim anything on a brand new car. Do I go 285 70 17 or 285 75 17?

285/70r17 are essentially the same size as the stock 265/70r18 so no chance of rubbing there. 285/75r17 are 1.2” bigger and just a tenth bigger than the 285/70r18s I’m having put on Saturday with the Peak 5/8” spacer (1.25” lift). Based on tons of examples here I’m fairly confident will fit (but ready to take off crash plate and trim felt if necessary). I’m betting you will be more than fine with the 285/75s with the 2.5” lift and +35 offset.

MikeD & OP both: Are you planning to put a matching spare in its stock location?

I also have the Westcott collar level kit and installed 285/75/18 KO3s along with 1.25” spacer on the stock wheels. Had to remove the front crash plate and trim some of the front felt, but when I would go off-roading with minor articulation the rear wheels would rub against the black fender wheel plastic. It chewed off the bottom plugs/clips and popped the trim piece off that’s attached to the door. Just swapped them out for 285/70/18s this week and although they don’t look as beefy on my 4Runner I think they’ll allow for more movement. We’ll see this weekend when I go off-roading. MikeD & OP both: Are you planning to put a matching spare in its stock location?

For the time being I’m going to risk it with the stock spare. I never had to use the spare on my 2003 Sequoia and thinking to treat it like a temporary donut spare - limit speed and replace right away if I need to use it. (Also - putting a 285 underneath will take away most of the added ground clearance from the bigger diameter tires;>)
